Do people really use their speed ovens?

last modified: 4 years ago

Our kitchen designer has designed a conventional wall oven with a smaller oven above it and has recommended a speed oven. I can't tell if speed ovens are just a fad or if it's really worth getting one. We love our current microwave and use a lot of the functions in addition to timed heating (sensor reheat, defrost, melt & soften). We also use our toaster oven a lot for toasting or for baking/convection baking smaller items.

It would be great to replace two appliances with just one, and it does seem that speed ovens are good for baking/convection baking. I also want to confirm that we'll get to keep all our current microwave functionality and that we will be able to use a speed oven to actually make toast.

EDIT: Would love to hear of models that have good, full-featured microwave functionality. Most of the reviews of speed ovens don't cover that

we have a Miele SO and use it multiple times a day. we love it! and we do use the 'speed" feature.

we wanted to rid ourselves of a stand alone MW, toaster oven and have a second oven and this fit the bill. while more expensive for sure - but totally worth it for us.!

alas, it does not toast well, so we did buy a 2 slice toaster that we store in cab above S.O.

I have an Advantium Speed Oven which was just installed 2 months ago. Definitely has all the great microwave featured and I've started to experiment with the speed oven part. It made an absolutely amazing baked potato in 14 minutes which was awesome. I did still keep my toaster/air fryer and feel there is a place for both. The Toast in the advantium takes a little while. I got it to be a 2nd oven when I need it and it totally fits the bill there. Definitely recommend.

We have a Trivection speed oven (GE Profile) and use it all the time. It's not one that can be used as a standalone MW, but it does use MW energy to speed up cooking significantly. It has Speed Cook, Convection, and "traditional" options -- including:

    • Speed Cook Bake & Broil (High & Low)
    • Convection Bake & Roast
    • Bake ("traditional" bake)
    • Broil (High & Low) ("traditional" broil)

Hmmm...I just went looking for it and couldn't find it. It appears GE doesn't make it anymore - it used to be in the Profile & Monogram lines. Too bad. It was an affordable Speed Cook oven that worked (and still works) great.

We use ours all the time -- except when making cakes and the like (they seem to do better with Convection or "traditional").

I had planned to get another when we build in a couple of years...darn! (I wonder if I can take it with me.....just kidding!) I'll have to look into another manufacturer at that time. I definitely do NOT want to go back to not having one!

Another Miele SO owner here. We've had it for ten years and use it as much as our full-sized oven. It pre-heats so much faster when you are making something smaller. The combination micro/bake function is brilliant for baked potatoes, frozen things like pot pies etc. And, of course, we use it every day for microwaving.

I agree about the toast, we have a countertop toaster. Also (maybe this is just Miele) we did have to replace the magnetron about two years back.

Another Advantium user here . . . I use it all the time and rarely use my full-sized oven.

The 240v Advantium is a great oven and very versatile. Most (or all?) of the other consumer SO's, including the 120v Advantium, not so much as the SO part lacks the power necessary to function well.

It can be a bit of a learning curve to learn to use properly but if you enjoy cooking (and eating the results!) then it can be a valuable tool.

That said, if I had to choose between an Advantium and CSO the CSO would win.

Another Miele SO user here. We use it every day for baking and microwaving items. I love how quickly it heats up and everything from vegetable to cookies to pies bake wonderfully. I've never used it to toast anything. We have a two slice toaster we keep in a drawer for when we want toast.

Miele also has a popular alternative. A combi-steam oven. Lots of happy users.

New Advantium users here after summer '21 remodel. My wife just calls it "a game changer". We honestly don't know why its not standard in every kitchen. Precision Cook is amazing. And about 180, super easy to navigate and use built in recipies on simply to navigate screen.

Frozen to cooked chicken breasts, 8 minutes. Tator Tots in 5 or 6. Roasted veggies in 12-13. NO PREHEAT. We actually went with 2 Advantiums. A 240V "high power" on stacked on top of a 120V twin (GE doesn't support twin 240v models). Why two? Because most microwaves look like the they were designed in 1993 and we wanted a clean, sleek look. We use the 120V Advantium mostly for microwaving and occasion speedcook duties. The "Beast" is the 240. Used nearly every day.

And the new, traditional Monogram French door oven...we figure that will be used for the holiday. Looks pretty though.

    So speed oven...100!!!

Sounds like most people find them fine as microwaves and not that great for toasting. Thanks for the help!

Oh, I should say I really liked the idea of a Bosch Benchmark 800 series Speed Oven (HMC80252UC), which even has a toast mode, but there are too many very bad reviews, ranging from the display dimming to severe temperature inconsistencies. There's even a class-action lawsuit. So that's out. Now leaning toward a 240V Advantium. The Mieles sound amazing but too expensive.

We just had an Advantium 120 installed a couple days ago. We are camping out with our kitchen until the counters and sink and cabinet doors are installed. So, we've been using the Advantium a lot the past few days since it is our only cooking appliance.

It works great as a microwave for re-heating, and the automatic sensor finds the appropriate temp. Last night we used it as a speed oven for frozen egg rolls. It worked great for that too, but I don't know how much faster it was than a standard oven would have been. I tried convection bake the other day; it cooked fine but my improvised recipe was a bust.

We have a small kitchen and wanted one appliance that serves multiple functions. So far we're happy with our purchase. I had been told that the major difference between the 120 and the 240 is that the 240 will cook faster if you've got hungry kids waiting for their frozen pizza or fries. Speed wasn't a concern for us, so we went with the more inexpensive model. Plus, I found a marked down model and saved money because it has a scratch where it will never be seen.

    Hope this helps.

@julieste, I have the 120 Advantium also and wanted to share that frozen pizza comes out very well. The crust is nice and crispy and ready to go in 15 minutes and no time to pre-heat.

The only time I use the oven is when I can't fit something in the speed oven. Granted, I don't add the microwave all the time when using it as an oven - but it does speed things up, if used correctly.

I got the 120 Advantium to replace a built in microwave. I wanted a second oven for cooking for two, and holidays. It works really well, but I really hate having to switch out the glass tray/metal tray between micro and bake functions. They are clunky to store and have to sit just right on the rollers when putting in place. I did rig up the small open space in the wall cabinet below the unit so I could just slide in the not-being-used tray. I then attached strong magnets and used the filler trim piece to cover the opening. Never use it to toast.
