Hi - It's kind of hard to get a handle on the layout. Can you draw a floorplan with dimensions and location of furniture etc.? It's very confusing!

A floorplan will help immensely. From what I can tell from photos, I don't think you have the TV/sectional set up in the best location (TV is too far away from seating). I would rotate the sectional 90 degrees and put the TV on the opposite wall (adjacent to the nook). then no one is walking in front of the TV when they walk into the space, and you have more room to divide the space. You can get a ping pong table but I wouldn't put it in the nook - I imagine that wouldn't be enough space and people will hit their heads on the ceiling (lots of moving around in ping pong). foosball maybe...

Blue lines are directions for moving current pieces. Yellow would be new game table and a pair of gaming chairs or bean bag style chairs.

I don't really see a great place for a pp table.

I remember our basement as kids with the pool table / ping pong table, a fridge that was stocked with sodas, a table where we could play cards or set our drinks and the dreaded white board that was the "Oh no - dad's going to go over our math homework board". We didn't have a sofa, but did have 8 or 10 chairs on wheels that could be moved around based on what activity we were doing. I think my parents felt better letting us alone without a sofa that could have become a bit too cozy. (We had 3 girls and 3 boys, so the groupings were always mixed).

Being the youngest of 6 and having the experience growing up was great when I got to college and hung out in the student center, knew how to make bank shots and could beat most anyone at ping pong.

Your kids may prefer the big sofa and lounging in front of the TV, but for me, I would bag the sofa and go for a full sized convertible ping pong/ pool table.

Jennifer Hogan as the youngest of 7, I can appreciate your memories! We had many nights rollerskating or riding our big wheels (younger days) in our basement. Good point on the sofa. 😉 I also use this space to host my weekly small group so I don’t want to make it just for the kids. Just want a cozy additional living space that is teen friendly so they‘ll want to hang out here. And a place for us to hang out as a family. (Our downstairs family room is on the small side.)

The key to a functional house is understanding how each space will be used by the family inhabiting the space.

I think I have a good understanding of how the space will be used. If the layout has to stay how it is, I'm really just interested in how to make it feel less cold and more cozy, so I'm looking for ideas for the walls, tabletops and lighting.

What if you flip the sectional where the back is to the window beside it instead? Would the TV fit where the 56x19 table is now? And then you could put the bar cabinet where the TV is now and maybe a ping pong table would fit on the other side of the stairs? It would have to be a small one though or maybe one that folds up when not in use.

I would get your kids involved in figuring out the decor of the space. The more it is their taste the more they will want to use it and bring friends there.

CNH 320 I was thinking about that, the sectional could work rotated along the window and the tv where the table is, but I think we would lose seating with the sofa so close to the tv (people would have to look directly to their right) and I like being able to look at the wooded backyard vs the street. The cabinet is 8’ long so it wouldnt fit on the other side of the stairs where the tv currently is but if I ditch the long cabinet I could put ping pong there. Thanks for your input!

I didn't get the measurements exact but if you swapped the sectional for different seating you could do something like this maybe. Not sure if the TV will fit in that corner but you could try. And if the ping pong table is foldable it could be moved against the wall when not in use. And maybe small chairs in the alcove that can easily be pulled closer to the tv if needed.

Given your satisfaction with the layout and desire for a more inviting space I would suggest that you focus on adding color.

You can add color with window coverings, art, throw pillows, throw blanket, area rug, upholstered furnishings

I think Jennifer's folks were visionaries!! I made sure our teen space had a lot of pillows/cushions at the ready for movie time! Teens can do floors!! We had a pool table with a way to convert it into a ping pong table. If you are going to dedicate the space for a table that size--make the most of it!!

I picked red, but you can do any color you love. I would probably lighten the walls as well.

Are they into any bands? Band ps have all kinds of merch that yiu can hang (flags, framed album covers). brighten it up with some colorful pillows in fun shapes or even a couple floor cushions. How about a big colorful pouf to sit on? Amazon has fun strip lights that you can turn any color with an app. They stick easily right on the wall or around the perimeter of the ceiling.

My daughter is into music. Maybe I‘ll hang her acoustic guitar and it will get more use when she’s home from college and hanging with her friends. My son is more into sports. He loves the strip lights and had some in his room. Maybe I‘ll add some to the nook area if we keep it as the gaming area. Thanks!
