I would say the 2 on the left are the most transitional. Second from the right is more modern. Any of them are acceptable, though.

I would not recommend hanging 2 sconces next to each other with staggered height. I think it looks like you needed something to fill the area, so you bought 2 sconces to fill in the space.

If I only used one sconce, what about this one? The measurements are 18"Diameter x 7"D. Would you consider it to be transitional?

Yes, I would say so. I would have to see where you are planning on placing it to see if it would work. It looks sort of odd with that cirlce around it.

When decor is functional, it looks good. So, think about why you are using a sconce. Do you need light somewhere or are you just sticking it up to fill the space?

A general tip: if you are placing things together, 3 is a good number. If on either side of something, 2 (sort of obvious, I guess).

It is a blank area of wall space about 49 inches wide adjacent to a large window just above our sectional. I don't really need light there, but I do need something to fill the space that is decorative.

I have attached a picture of the family room decorated by the previous owners. Keep in mind my decorating is completely different, more transitional. I have added a red arrow where I was considering putting the sconce.

Wow. That is a gorgeous room! Before you spend any $ on a sconce, make sure you arrange your furniture and have the big stuff in place. Consider:

-do you want to hang panel drapes?
-do you want a light fixture there?

So, go from large to small, functional to decorative in your process. It sounds like you may be getting ahead of yourself.

Thank you for offering your help! My color scheme is champagne, venetian blue, gray, and ivory. The window wall and the wall across from it are the same color as above, but the wall behind the fireplace is now covered in a champagne fabric wall covering. We also removed the carpet and installed hardwood that matches the remaining flooring in the house. I have a gray leather sectional in front of the windows, but I am thinking about putting venetian blue drapery panels up. My furniture arrangement and large purchases are out the way. I bought all new furniture at Thomasville when we bought the house. I am now just at the stage of accessorizing which is where I struggle. I will try to post a picture of the current room tomorrow. The artwork above my two chairs will be raised. My husband hung it too low.

Wow! You have done an amazing job! I would not say that you struggle with accessories at atl! Yes, the artwork should be about 4" above the chairs.

Now that I see your room, I am glad you bought the sleeker sconce.It is more fitting with your style.

A couple of suggestions:

-I am guessing you have a plan to hide the cable box?
-If you hang drapes, for the corner area, I would place 2 drapes that meet, using a corner rod and no drape on the fireplace side. You might consider buying partial rods.
-I think it would look good to place a matching sconce on the wall opposite where you just hung the sconce.
-if you hang drapes,I would move the sconce to the left and hanging the sconces directly under the header would look good.
-what do you think of some small, lumbar pillows on the chairs, in the darker gray of the couch? Not necessary, but would sort of pull it all together.

Looks fabulous! The sconce is great! Agree the cable box isn't appealing....and agree with cdrdesign about a matching sconce.

I looked back on your notes and have a question about the venetian blue: maybe my colors are off, but I am seeing some blue only in the artwork. You mentioned venetian blue drapes. That would work. Then, I would use venetian blue also in the lumbar pillows I suggested for the chairs.

I do love my new sconce! It is even more gorgeous when you actually see it on the wall. cdrdesign, when you suggest hanging a matching sconce on the wall opposite where we just hung the sconce, are you meaning on the other side of the windows or across the room on the wall adjacent to the large artwork above the chairs? If it is across the room there is a light switch in that area that will make the sconce hang too high.

I do plan to hide the cable box. We are going to get longer cables, put the box on top of my lighted bookcase behind the platter and run the cables along the wall behind the bookcase.

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the drapes. I was wondering what I would do in that corner and near the fireplace. I like the idea of using a corner rod and no drape on the fireplace side. I also like partial rods. We have those in our master bedroom and they are much more classy than the other type.

I thought about putting lumbar pillows on the chairs, too. The drapes will be venetian blue, the artwork is venetian blue, the flowers in the vase are venetian blue, and a couple of the accessories are that color. I think adding pillows to the chairs would set them off. Z Gallerie has two really pretty pillows - one that is venetian blue and gray and one that is taupe. They aren't lumbar pillows and they might be too big for the chairs, they are 24 inch square. The description of the first pillow reads: "The luxurious look is achieved with a graceful floral pattern in Venetian Blue satin, outlined in a single row of glistening beads and appliqued to a rich Grey velvet background." I have attached 2 photos of pillows I like, but again, they aren't lumbar. The other pillow is also 24 inches square and the description reads: "With bold hues of sand and taupe our 100% micro velvet pillow ensures sophisticated and tailored look." What do you think?

We originally had two ottomans on order that matched each chair. I still like that idea, but would it be too crowded and are they necessary?

The vase of flowers was bought at Z Gallerie: http://www.zgallerie.com/p-10430-kamal-vase-30h-white.aspx. The flowers are magnolias in venetian blue.

I am also thinking about buying the attached vase and setting it on the hearth of the fireplace the side closest to the flowers and floor lamp. It is silver but the etching on it is champagne.

I don't think scones will work in space. Go a gold tone or mercury glass sunburst mirror 24" . Are you putting up window covers that would help fill wall really need to see with your furn. If sofa is smaller could do a dark framed tall floor mirror just lean on that wall.

I don't think you should put any more decor in the room. It is enough as it is. (nothing more on fireplace. Less is more)

Pillows: I am confused. The ones you posted are the Z Gallerie ones? I am not wild about either those you posted. I would use a plain venetian blue lumbar.

I wouldn't worry about the light switch. An electrician or handyman could move that with very little cost.

However, before you get it moved, I would get your drapes up. Once you hang your drapes, who knows.....you may decide you don't want the sconce by the window at all (maybe too crowded).

If you really like the sconces, what you may want to end up doing is placing them on either side of the artwork. I think that would look fabulous.

Yes, I think they will look more purposeful and bring needed light to that area. It could be a little competition with your display case, but I imagine you don't light the case that often.

Candles: is the candle in the sconce real or fake? Have you seen the ones you can buy that are fake but look real? Can be controlled with a remote, timer or both?

Yes, I think it will look good under the header and when you add your drapes, it will look centered btwn drapes and end of wall.

I actually asked my husband to help me move the sectional back to the end of the wall this weekend. We are also going to raise the artwork so it is 4 inches higher than the chairs.

ckoeppel, this room looks great! IMHO, the art by the two chairs does not need to be raised. I like the tight composition and resultant "layered" effect. One minor suggestion: move the display case out of the corner and almost against the hearth to let it "breathe" Can't wait to see your final tweaks. You are good.

Chairs and artwork: It may be the angle, but it appears the chair is in front of the artwork. Instead, is it that the chairs are beside the artwork?

If you get a chance, could you take a head on shot of the table, chairs, art?

Just throwing this idea out there......There is a lot of light coming from tv and bookcase and some competition btwn bookcase and tv and light is needed by chairs.

What do you think of moving bookcase btwn chairs and then moving art to dining room?
