L Shaped Brick Ranch. HELP!

Purchasing this dated home. The inside is perfect for us but the outside is truly hurting. I don't even know where to start. Any and all ideas are welcomed!

From what I can see the front looks nice . Go back and shoot some more photos and tell us what you feel is wrong , then we have an idea of what you are looking for . From where I sit perhaps more plants ...but need more photos . Nice house , congrats !!!

It's not really that bad. Cleaning up landscaping is a start. Removing the shutters will help. Paint the trim a complementary color. Add a row of windows to the garage door and paint it to blend better with the bricks. Power wash the concrete and maybe even remove some of it so it's not so close to the house

Light up the front entry - it’s cave-like. I can’t see what is on the ground, but some nice stone would be good. I can’t see the front door, but it should be attractive. You can do some planters along the front of the house to help funnel visitors to the door. A nice garage door will help too. But most of all, bright lighting at the door.

I love brick ranch style homes too . I agree with all of the above and for sure make that driveway only serve the garage that allows for some landscaping and attention brought to the entry .No shutters maybe start there ,I na perfect world the gaarge would not be there but changed to front drive but I can't see the rest of the lot on the left . Could you take one pic from further back and one of a close up of the brick that will help a lot.

Start with your budget. Write down your budget range for immediate changes, and another range for changes further down the line.

    Free things:

    Trim shrubs

Hose off the house including shutters and driveway.

Move birdbath so you can see it from the kitchen window.

    Inexpensive things:

Pressure wash driveway and concrete edging.

Paint the nearly invisible shutters with a warm taupe brown about two shades darker than the roof.

Plant spring blooming daffodils along the foundation bed (use several 50-bulb bags from Burpee or the local garden center). They can be moved when you re-landscape the beds.

Here are some mid--taupe-brown shutters on a white house:

Agree that a good power washing of house, roof, and driveway is a good start (after you remove shutters that don't suit the ranch style).

Here's a house with a similar brick palette. Paint garage doors a golden taupe pulled from the lightest brick that also works with your brown roof color.

Work with a small garden center to choose native foundation shrubs along front and side of the garage--a mix of taller and shorter shrubs in different colors to frame your house. (That spiky plant should leave the premises today!)

Later on, work on the garden bed to the right of the driveway.

Is it brick or stucco? California? Many (if not most in some areas) ranch houses built in California before the 1980's were designed and built with shutters. The shutters were never meant to be closed and never looked like they could be. They were simply decoration as designed. There's no historically correct reason to take them off if the shutters have been there since the houses were built. Of course if you don't like them, you can remove them for a stripped down look.

Thank you so very much for all the suggestions!!! You make me feel like there is hope.

One question: how would you suggest I lighten up that front entry?

Remove that bush from the side of the entry. Lighten the doors; they look to be black. Take a pic closer to it so we can see.

The house is nice. I'd paint the garage doors an olive green, and either remove the shutters or paint them the same green. A deeper warmer color would look so much better with the roof and brick than the current light gray. For the entry, remove any furniture in that area and add an updated, bright light to each side of the front door. You can also add some landscape uplighting when you refresh the plants.

Put a matching sister arbor vitea to the left for symmetry. Love the hip roof. Nice buy. Frenchify it...see pix.

Look up "sun tunnel." It's a kind of tube with glass/acrylic flat top and bottom, like a wide pot light. It's installed on the roof into the entryway ceiling. You'll still need some overhead lighting for the entry at nighttime.

Consider painting your front door a very light turquoise. Add some planters in the same light shade to pull the eye forward.

I live in a mostly-brick city (Toronto) and we never power wash our brick. In fact we never wash it at all unless the dirt splashes on the bottom few rows when the house is newly-built. You can damage brick with a power washer.

Love the house, especially the roof line.

Power wash the driveway if it is stained. Consider a new trim or wall color, or both. Add some zone-specific flowering shrubs to the landscape.

You lighten up the front entry with lights. The suggestion to paint the front door will help, but you absolutely need lights, even during the day, because the roof casts such a dark shadow.

The cream brick is attractive and works well with the roof. The gray garage doors and shutters do not go well with the color scheme. I'd make them a sage green. You have an acre of driveway in front of your house. I'd remove as much as you can to the right and replace it with grasses or low-growing shrubs.

cool house trish. there is so much you could do w/the exterior. I'd go a little modern retro!

since you have that huge driveway, curb appeal around that is paramount to the look of the home.

I'd pull out that tree right next to the front door/window. it does nothing there.

It's difficult to find your exact house style in before/afters, but here are some to give you ideas. I'd get a more modern garage door, front door, and consider doing a dark trim on the roof fascia and around the garage. No Shutters!

new front door, new address numbers, some wood slat accents, and the cement pavers w/low plants.

    Crude photoshop

Pair that with an update driveway and some simple landscaping

see the right side of this hill? Do yours like this one.

Both of these are concrete, but w/the xeriscape rocks and succulents on the sides, it really completes the look

maybe do a stone pathway along side the flower beds.

at the very least, paint your garage door dark, and add some hardware and new lights.

I’d say paint the brick a (creamy) white, add black or stained wooden shutters….the “simple kind”. The examples shown are shutters hubby and I built and stained…..you could also paint them black……super easy.

Dated? Not at all! I love a hip roof. I agree that casement windows will give it a more updated look and also a new garage door offers a lot of possibilities. But it looks just fine as is, focus on landscaping. Great time of year to do planting.

Not sure of your location, but where I am in the South, power washing driveways is a never ending chore once you start it. I'd focus on landscaping and with great landscaping, no one will notice the driveway.

Either paint existing windows or replace with black, paint garage door black or replace with one here. Remove the shutters. I can't see the front entry area well enough from the picture to comment on that. Landscaping similar to this picture, including the walkway as your driveway if possible, if not, maintenance/update to the asphalt driveway would help pull it together with the black.

I like the house, slight changes, otherwise a great ranch. Mine was not a great ranch. LOL

    Oh also black shutters!

Remove the furniture that is blocking the front door. Consider creating a sitting area to the right. When you have some money, think about redoing the driveway in a more interesting product, but for now just power wash it. You already have a great list of ideas regarding the shutters, front door, landscaping, garage door and extra lighting to give the front door more attention. I like your house! It just needs a little love. Several ideas are not expensive, so start a list and research the cost of the higher priced ideas (new garage and front door are always worth the money). Keep us posted. Congratulations on your home!
