Appropriate Rug Size

I have a large "great room" where I have both a dining table and a living room setup with TV and sofa.
Should I get a 8x10 or 9x12 rug? Also, what orientation is best? Please ignore the color of the rug and just focus on the size and orientation. Thanks!
