Updating 1970s Colonial - WWYD?

In the Spring (depending on the supply chain situation), we’ll be replacing the siding & windows on our 1970s colonial, or at least starting the process. Its desperately needed. Thoughts on how to modernize it a bit overall as we make this change? Is there a change we could make to the elevation that wouldn’t be over the top expensive? Its just so RECTANGULAR right now.

We know we will need to:

-Replace siding - cant decide on color. Thoughts on what might look good with the brick?

-Replace windows - opinions on black vs white frames on this style house?

-Change out green shutters - probably will do black, but depends on siding color

-New front door

-New columns on porch - existing iron swirly ones are tragic

-Is the red brick ”too much?” Whitewash maybe? I think people also ”side over” the brick but not sure of the pros and cons of that. There’s just so much brick.

-The front walkway needs to be replaced

-Probably need to rip out landscaping and start over, especially the weird shrubs on right under thr garage windows

What is your vision as to style? Stripped of its; shutters / the scalloped fascia board / support columns and selecting new window type you can achieve a variety of "looks". A new photo (posted here as a comment) showing the color of the bricks (sunlight hitting them) will get you better color ideas.

There is a lot of potential here, it is very cute. Here is our house for a sample of a 1960s colonial with just black and white with brick. It can look pretty with brick.

IMO remove the shutters , the posts need to be wood or composite material, yes the landscaping needs work . But first of all we need to know what you mean by modernizing. This os one of my faves for color with red brick. I think the fasteset way to devalue a house is to paint the brick just FYI This is not really more modern but a really nice look with the brick

I’d remove the upper shutters.
And then with new porch posts, siding and landscaping your golden!

Depends on your style and roof color. So many possibilities. I would keep the natural brick and work from there with the roof to choose siding, then door and shutters. Modernizing the columns and adding a winding walkway (instead of straight path) will ease the boxiness of the house.
