Millennial Bachelor Seeks Advice on 90s Family Room

I bought this house a few months ago. It was built in the mid-90s. While it needs a complete downstairs remodel, I’m going to have to do it in phases because of costs. One of the biggest eyesores is this corner fireplace with (what I can only assume was) an entertainment center to the right of it. I will preface this with: 1) the sectional is too big (fit in last house) so I’ll be getting rid of it 2) the tv is too big, it’ll be replaced with a smaller one and 3) ignore the rug, it’s going too.

I need help with what to do with the entertainment center wall and fireplace. Do I just Sheetrock it in? Do I make a built in console/cabinet on the lower part? I am not tearing down the wall (breakfast room and back door other side) - I actually like having separation and clearly defined spaces. The fireplace itself - I hate the tile and obviously the mantle that carries over to the entertainment center wall needs to go. I’m basically looking for suggestions.

My style, you ask? No idea (haha!). The house is a traditional suburban 90s house. I think just from some searches maybe I gravitate towards a transitional style ?? I like elements of traditional and elements of modern. I despise anything related to shiplap or “farmhouse”.

Do you need a fireplace? IMO corner FPs are just poor design always. I have removed them for clients many times I think the TV is an okay size but where you have it is too high.If it was my house I would rip out the FP and that whole area where the shelves are have a nice flat wall with a great low TV cabinet , maybe Besta from Ikea , use the TV you have wall hung so that the center of the screen is at eye level when you are seated. Then a nice sofa facing the TV and a one or 2 armchairs . Please no reclining furniture .Could you post a to scale floor plan the space does not look very large to me. In fact is there another space for maybe a nice electric FP so you have more than one area for entertaining.

Here’s a rough layout of downstairs. The yellow area is what you’re looking at. Some of the dimensions might be slightly off (island to couch) but I got the walls right (each square = one foot).

I don’t “need” a fireplace but I always wanted one. I had considered relocating it centered on the wall with the entertainment center, and then squaring off the room. I haven’t priced that out yet, but I imagine it’s not cheap.

If you’ve always wanted a fireplace why not work with it? i would drywall over the entertainment center area & perhaps ( depending upon finish you select) have large format tile, or porcelain, stone , quartz ? installed over it, maybe to the ceiling. I’ve seen many attractive corner fireplaces . Google corner fireplace ideas for inspiration.
