I had Celestine before........Snowmageddon last year killed it - along with quite a few other roses. The color was striking! Celestian Night is a similiar color and I have that but I just remember that vibrant Celestine and so glad I got it. Did you order South Africa or Anne Vanderlove? My Anne is a good strong rose with vibrant color. I think you would like it. One I got a couple of years ago was Darling Melissa. It is really beautiful! Loads of blooms, blackspot free foliage, and it is a really well shaped bush. It turns quite light - wish it was a little darker peach, but the blooms are very big and its covered with them. They should offer this one again. I know Palatine has worked hard on this website and I feel bad there was so much trouble. Sure hope people got at least some of what they wanted. I think I am still in shock my order went through. There are alot of roses that can be had elsewhere. Wish they would add more of Brad Jalbert's roses - I have a Bon Appetit that I got from Palatine several years ago - its gorgeous! Their roses are the nicest I get anywhere and grow well. Too bad website isnt as good as the roses!

Judith, I went back later and found SA and AV but 3 is plenty and I feel good about what I got. Its just weird that it showed out of stock and an hour later it was available.

I remember now that you had Celestine. I will have one in front and one in back. Such a fabulous color.

I'm glad it worked for most of you! It totally slipped my mind to log on at the right time, and by the time I remembered, what I wanted was gone. Were any of you able to get Duchesse de Montebello? That's the one I was most grieved about.

Kristine, I would like to plant Celestial Night and Celestine close to each other and compare......with also some lilac like Plum Perfect or Poseidon nearby.....perhaps a light yellow......

Alameda, I would love to see a picture of that combination. I bet it will would be fabulous.

My One Celestine will be next to Bordeaux, that may hurt my eyes and the other will be in front of Cinco de Mayo.

I took my day off today preparing for exciting moment from the famous rose grower. I was in 574 in line, waited for 15 mins, got in and immediately was kicked back to 1758. I patiently waited for another 20 minutes: All the roses I really wanted gone, got only 4 of my 2nd choice and 2 others in the cart. When I checked out, it told me that one by one of the roses in cart was no longer available. After I adjusted 6 times in a slow speed, All my 4 second choices gone. I emptied my cart and gave up. I don't think I would want to go thru this again next year, so I have just ordered 8 roses from David Austin - 2019-2021 roses + bathesa + boscobel and Munsteadwood. Anybody have experience with the bareroot rose size at David Austin? Their shipping charge seems reasonable.

@MimiPNW Sorry to hear about your experience. I like bareroots from David Austin Roses as well. And they have 5 year warranty if anything is wrong with bareroots.

David Austin's bare roots historically are husky and impressive, but the 2021 Spring bare roots left much to be desired. Many were surprisingly small considering their pricing and compared to years prior, I was disappointed. I must also acknowledge that, as others have noted, they are charging a premium for new rose varieties pre-loaded with RMV because the Dr. Huey stock they use is not clean. The website says they're "virus free" but I can confidently say from personal experience (Lady Emma Hamilton) that this is not the case.

I'm going to have to use their "Guarantee" for at least my Young Lycidas. It was one of the smallest, most pitiful I received last year and croaked before September. I wonder if they'll honour it or give any push-back. My Eustacia Vye was split up the middle of the rootstock nearly into the bud union. Sure it survived, but it definitely wasn't a premium plant to have received.

Mimi, while Steven is absolutely correct about DA’s roses last spring USUALLY they are an excellent size. I have only had to use their guarantee once and they were great about it. My Emma is disease free but my Generous Gardener has RMV-I just ignore it.

I am very sorry for your shopping experience-it was a letdown for a lot of people :(

Alameda, my Celestial Night is with Blue Girl, Royal Jubilee and a bunch of phlox. Fragrant Plum and EbbTide are just a few feet away.

It used to be right next to Plum Perfect also but I moved that to go next to Stainless Steel.

The colors are still similar with what you’re going for and I think you’ll love it.

@Aaron Rosarian Zone 5b-you are such a great detective! Thank you! I try to buy in bunches since most nurseries sell a certain amount of roses for the same in shipping and I need to stretch my dollars as practically as I can.

HCR is probably the best deal out there and I can just wait until Matt has Yolande again.

cl Souv de la Malmaison may have to go by the wayside

Mimi, what a disaster! That is the worst experience that Ive heard about.

I waited, got kicked back and waited again. The two that I really wanted were gone so I left

After 30 minutes I decided that I really wanted another Celestine so I went back in. I got 3 that I am really happy with. Here is the weird thing, about 30 minutes after that, the two that I originally wanted were back in stock. By that point I was done and didn't want to stir the pot by trying to add anything.

My surprise purchase was Rosematic fuschia. I figured that it would be long gone so super excited about that one.

Im not sure if by next year the glitches will be worked out but darn it, they have great roses.

A rose that they offer that not many have spoken of is Lasting Love. I really love mine...and it's still available. Blooms a lot...great fragrance...a shortie for me.

Kristine - you can email Rachel and she will add roses to your list. :)

Carol , I know that I could contact Rachel but I think that I will just be content with what I got.

It sounds like you got lots of goodies .

    Sure, nuff said. :) :)

    Yes, I got

    - Anastasia

    - Buxom Beauty

    - Charles de Gaulle

    - Crazy Fashion

    -Rosemantic Pink

    - Sweet Delight

    - Augusta Luise

    - Blue for You

    - Comte de Chambord

    - Martina Mondadori

    I'm excited about getting them!

Yay, we can compare our Charles.

I also grow Blue For You and it is a great rose.

    Cant wait to see pictures.

Thank you, oursteelers. You are completely right about the "USUALLY". When I first ordered from David Austin Roses in 2003/2004, I couldn't believe how impressive their roses were for size and quality. Indeed also most folks don't let the RMV issues trouble then. There are certainly many discussions regarding the impact the virus has or does not, haha!

Oh, I do look forward to seeing everyone's pictures! I recall Blue for You being available potted one season at a local Menard's a few years back, and I was impressed by the colour and found the fragrance pleasant and noticeable.

I observed that for the varieties I ordered from Palatine, it's about 50/50 for what was sold out versus still available. I'm considering going back and ordering some more others if they're available then. Rosa moyesii is one.

Kristine LeGault 8a pnw....If you still want South Africa, High Country Roses has it own root. I got one in March, put it in a pot and it grew to 3 feet by June/July and was blooming its head off.

Kristine - Blue For You is the rose I'm most excited about getting...it's so beautiful!! So good to hear it's a great rose for you! It will be fun to compare our Chucks. :)

Steven - you may as well go back and order more...it'll be vastly easier. :) :) I would actually go through Rachel to make sure the orders are not sent separately. Thanks for the fragrance appraisal...that's enough fragrance for me. :) :)

Thank you everyone for the sympathy messages and responses to my questions (very informative). I take a chance for David Austin order then, I'll keep my fingers-crossed and see what I will get. I see Boscobel is a ownroot in my order. This maybe my last order for roses as I have a small space.

@MimiPNW I love Boscobel! I hope you have a good experience with it!

    last modified: 4 years ago

@mimi oh no trouble at all. I plan on still ordering a couple from DAR this coming season too.

@rosecanadian Carol, that is an absolutely fantastic idea. Rachel is fabulous to interact with, yet I honestly hadn't considered doing more plants as an add-on in some ways to my order already placed to prevent a separate shipment. Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy the scent of Blue for You; I feel I would call it "moderate" in strength.

@librarian Boscobel looks fantastic. I admire people's plants and the pictures they share, but it just hasn't spoken to me yet. I am aiming for Eglantyne though and I enjoyed my first Bishop's Castle that I'm considering another.

Thanks again for the pictures and experience. I do not have green thumb, so I ordered all the new roses with the hope that new roses are better bred, Eustacia Vye, Emily Bronte, Garbriel Oak, James Austin, only Bathesa, Boscobell and Munstead Wood are older roses. I like their color and flower form. I am replacing my knockout roses with these. I feel sorry for the knockout roses, but I really have limited space and want to have new experience. I did order from Palatine once last year with some kordes roses and of course not able grabbing the roses I really wanted and I do not have the patience to wait for year after year.

I hope I can get my going to be boscobel bloomed like yours Librarian.

David Austin is later this year with their catalog and revealing their 2022 roses. These two, Silas Marner and The Country Parson, are listed as out of stock on their website. I assume they will be available in January but hope they have not sold out already. I went ahead and made an order this evening.......Eustacia Vye, The Poet's Wife, The Lady Gardener, Bishop's Castle, Gentle Hermoine and Tamora. Will try Silas Marner if it comes available.

Steven - you're welcome! :) :) Moderate strength fragrance sounds good for this beautiful rose! :) Man, that's a gorgeous BC!

thank you @Aaron Rosarian Zone 5b for the help! (I actually didnt see a way to DM you) Unfortunately the shipping costs to my coast is too expensive from RPN; hopefully RVR has it in stock next year!

Palatine sold out of Double Delight, Variegata di Bologna, and Queen of Denmark. All are available at RVR:

Well, got an email from Rachel today confirming that Palatine has deleted my account (at my request). I'm probably done with them forever, regardless of what roses they might stock. I can't be angry at Rachel, she was as sweet as could be, but the ineptitude of the site roll-out was beyond the pale. It's simply not worth my time (or the gamble) to deal with them again.

@Aaron Rosarian Zone 5b let me know if you find pompom v and Spirit of freedom! the two on top of my list 😩

@fig_insanity Z7b E TN not going to lie, i was pretty disapointed too. just terrible to put customers through this not only once but twice just to be left with nothing. what a mess!

Here is an update on e-transfer payment option if you haven't already known. PalatineRoses can't accept e-transfer payment from US customers, so US customers need to call them and pay through the phone using credit cards. Helen

I have to say that I was VERY disappointed in how their site was handled. Most of the roses I wanted were sold out. I believe that they said that folks who had an account already set up with them would get first priority. I never received an email from them. Major bummer. I won't give up on them though because to me they are tops in providing very large, healthy bareroot roses.

    last modified: 4 years ago

Bella, things have changed many times this year at PalaPalatineRoses. At the end, there is no priority whether you set up an account or not. However, one should set up an account before doing any purchase with them because if you tried to do that when all the craziness was going on, most roses in your cart would be sold out and removed.

Only a selected few people received the presale email so they can do a beta test for the website. I didn’t receive the presale email. From what I read, US customers who got the presale emails couldn’t make any purchases because they couldn’t use their credit cards. Many Canadian customers had smooth purchases this time. Helen

I set up my account months ago, so again, I'm suprised that I didn't receive an email notification regarding early ordering option.

Well, they have another year to fine tune the process. And, they have such beautiful bare root that it is worth it to me.

All though, because of diminishing space and my advancing age, this will be the last year of ordering ( says she with high hopes )

Kristine - I agree...I love Palatine roses!! And they've been here for us Canadians when we haven't been able to get roses anywhere else.

You know you're going to want at least one more next year. :) :)

One of my ways to keep track of quick changes is just posting a message in a threat like this threat. When there is a new change, someone will post it here, and I will receive the notification in the email. Other ways are to follow their Facebook and/or Instagram accounts, and you will see new updates in your social feed. Helen

Helen, because of your amazing pictures of Rosematic fuschia, I decided to order it and luckily I was able to snag one

Hopefully it is as gorgeous as yours.

Kristine, mine is in a pot, and if yours is in the ground it will look even better. Helen

Not sure where it is going yet. We removed a blue spruce tree and it left a nice big empty planting bed

    Whoo hoo!

@CeresMer Zone 7a NJ spirit of freedom is at heirloom every so often; I'd check there and David Austin US website for it.

Pompon Veranda is nigh impossible to find. I think Freedom Gardens is probably your best bet unless someone shares a cutting.

Pompon Veranda is sold by Palatine... now sold out. Perhaps I missed the earlier discussion about this.

Kristine - excellent!! I'm glad you got one!! :) :)

@htracyn79 PNW-8B thank you so much!!! i cant believe! i will call tomorrow to add to my order together with tamora!

Does anyone know if Palatine will sell older DA roses this year, like they did last year?

They won’t sell discontinued DA this year.

it's sad but true. Note that Peter Schneider has a large list of discontinued DA roses on his Custom Propagation list--I think Schneider and Palatine have a good relationship with each other and have seen similar roses carried by both. I am tremendously jealous of anyone who managed to get a WS2000.

Aaron, I'm on the lookout for The Bard Y2K, too. If you ever find it, let us know.

I’ve noticed that DA has several discontinued roses available this year for purchase. I have not seen this in the past few years in their site, but there are several currently available.
