I think it’s a little large/not the right shape. I have a similar entryway as you and used a square rug, I think a square rug would look better.

Thanks! The part I was worried about being too big was the part against the door and stairs though, which wouldn’t be impacted by shortening the long edges. I want to cover as much Area as possible but also want to make sure I’m not breaking any “rules” about how close a rug should be to the door/stairs :)

I think it looks just right, you want it to serve the purpose and there are no rules just some things are more pleasing to the eye. Not to criticize as there are no rules the square rug picture shared above is not pleasing to my eye

Is try one size down. And see if you feel better about it.

I happen to like a larger rug at an entry so people can actually stand on it to remove shoes or boots so I like this one

I’m not super attached to this particular rug—it was reasonable priced and I thought it was pretty. Plus I knew I wanted to try a few different sizes and didn’t want to spend a small fortune ordering multiple rugs.

There’s a rug design that I really love but I’m not sure which color variation would look best in our home.

Ahhh, the old heater vent problem. I can relate to that. We were prevented from having a larger rug by the door for years due to this reason. When we redid the floors from tile to wood, my husband moved the vent down a ways for this reason. The rug size still looks good.

Amy- yes it’s a bummer! But oh well, I’d rather have a larger rug that’s a bit farther from the door than a smaller one with less covered area 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think a smaller rug would work oriented the other way, so it won’t cover the vent.

Maybe a 3 x 4 oriented like this. You could slide it closer to the door.

I think it's too big -- mostly because I know I 100% would trip on the edge whenever I came down the stairs. ;) I personally would get something rectangular, the same length as the door+sidelites.

Thanks, all! It’s a big area so I definitely want to have as much coverage as possible. We initially considered a runner instead of doing any kind of entry rug but for us that wasn’t practical. We have three crazy kids ages 2, 4 and 6 and we need a place for them to take off their shoes, etc.

Also curious what everyone thinks about the color/pattern and whether or not you think I should go darker? Again here’s the other rug I had been eyeing, just not sure what color.

Our hardwood floors have a reddish tint to them so I don’t want to accentuate that.

I think either would work fine. I don't have a preference.

I like the darker one — I think it compliments the area better and just looks more interesting and pretty.

I think it's definitely too big - looks cramped and out of proportion.

Fold up a sheet (or cardboard, or a bunch of 8 1/2 x 11 pieces of paper, or pillow cases...) and try different sizes to see what looks just right.

You would not have asked if it was too big if you didn't think it looked too big.

I prefer the darker one, get a good rug pad, not those mesh things you find at discount stores but one about 1/4 inch felt with a no slip backing. It will allow the rug to lay flat and hang down a bit around the perimeter so no tripping.

I never have any luck using a rug pad under an entry way rug where the door has to open over it. I just ordered a Ruggable to try, since their pads are thin, plus I won't have to pay for dry cleaning the wool rug I usually use there.

I also worry about the way that the rug interacts with the stairs. If anything, I would opt for a wider rug to marry the stairs to the entrance. Your could try FLOR carpet squares to design a perfect coverage. Plus, these squares are washable.Take a look: https://www.flor.com
