buzzing under-cabinet LEDs

Our electrician installed under-cabinet LEDs on dimmers. Most, but not all buzz even when fully on. Been trying to figure out why. Maybe something with the switches incompatible with the LEDs? Or a problem with the install? Isn't an electrician supposed to know how to choose LEDs and switches and install them so they don't buzz? I consider this an error on the part of the electrician. My contractor's manager is telling me I approved the fixtures so the problem is mine, not theirs.

Well what I seem to hear on this site is a lot of electricians in the US have no clue about LEDs . IMO you do not need dimmers on under cabinet lighting and if you inssit on them they need to be the right ones for the lighting you have . I like lighting in the kitchen to be controlled by seperate switches so under cabinet , pendants and pots lights all on there own switch most of my client use the undercabinet lighting for midnight fridge raids and when they are working in the kitchen they use all the lighting.. Maybe try just having the dimmers removed or install the right ones .

Juniper the whole LED thing is complicated. I work with a high end lighting showroom for all my components and still things get funky sometimes- in my personal home one of my $200 track heads (don’t ask) started randomly flashing like paparazzi- they of course replaced it. Were all the components- lights, transformers, and dimmers bought at one store? If so you may be able to get them to make suggestions. Sometimes switching out to a different brand dimmer helps, maybe they sold you a non dimmable transformer or it was incorrectly sized.

Thanks, Patricia. If the dimmer is the problem, I will just remove it. Someone suggested dimmers to me but I agree, it's not necessary.

Thanks, Hallett. The electrician supplied everything. I guess he was "one store." My contractor actually posted online that he was no longer going to use this electrician because of client complaints. He posted that publicly while the electrician was still on my job! And now the contractor tells me I approved the lights (by looking at a picture he showed me on his phone) so I'm stuck with them.

There is nothing complicated about LEDs you can change any bulb you have to LED by simple repacing the bulb , where the trouble comes in is when you want dimmers not all bulbs work with dimmers so you need to make sure the bulbs you buy are dimmable. I aslo never buy LED fixtures with integrated bulbs but other than that a great choice for lighting . We have cahnged every bulb in our house to LED not one issue we had 95% halogens and a few incandecsents now all LEDs and the bonus no heat from the bulbs and all 4000K so a ton better lighting and my electric bill went down too.

That's interesting, chiflipper. Most of the subs I have do not buy from the big boxes so I just assumed this one didn't. Maybe not so!

I agree, Patricia. Hate the integrated bulbs. I only have a few disks with them where I needed tasks lights on a low ceiling. I don't think these under-cabinet have integrated bulbs. They look like my old fluorescent fixtures except with LEDs. I just assumed the electrician knew how to match dimmers with bulbs. When I question things, my contractor says, "Just trust the professionals." Actually, he doesn't say that any more because I have caught at least a dozen mistakes that "the professionals" missed. The professionals even drywalled right over 2 of my HVAC supplies, and nobody but me noticed.

Juniperg92 - When we remodeled our kitchen 21 months ago, we had our professional electrician install under-cabinet LED lighting - and it buzzed also…(YES, we have a dimmer switch on the wall as he recommended). He heard the buzzing right away and was not pleased. He put another one in (same model, thinking maybe first one was defective) but got same buzzing result. Frustrated, he left and came back later with a different model (which to our very pleasant surprise, was much more aesthetically pleasing because it has a slimmer profile which makes it less noticeable under cabinets) and it works perfectly!! So at least in our experience, it DOES make a difference in which LED models are used with a dimmer. All I can tell you about the model we have is it also has 3 lighting color options, and an additional manual on/off switch on each fixture. IMO, (and I know I am not alone), a dimmer is absolutely a feature I would not live without. I turn it all the way up when “task” lighting is needed, and dim it all the way for “a night-light” effect every evening, and when we are out.

It sounds like you had a great electrician, Jamie. I'm having a nightmare with this project. The contractor, the subs (except for the great carpenters) have been mostly bad. Mistake after mistake and people acting like I'm in the wrong when I want things fixed. The job was supposed to be done today. Inspection is this afternoon. I was just at the site. Trim not done. Mess everywhere. Railings not it. Cabinets not finished. Paint marred and smudged worse than the last time I was there. I want this to be over so bad. I don't think I have the energy left to fight with the electrician. He had me in tears the last time he was there, refusing to do something for me he just told the project manager he would do. This has been a nightmare.

Oh Juniperg92 !! I am sooo sorry!!! Hang in there - it really WILL be finished one day soon 😬….please take 5 really deep breaths and hold each for 5 seconds (just a suggestion - it really helps me when I am very stressed to stay motivated)…you deserve to have things done right!!! DON’T give up on your demands - REMEMBER - YOU are the “employer”, and you need to be happy with things in the end!!!🧐🙂

Thank you, Jamie! I really needed that!

Open warfare (via text) going on with contractor now. Fortunately the carpenter/project manager (who is actually a sub, not an employee) was on site this morning and agrees with me. Nothing resolved yet.

And we just failed the inspection.

Lutron LED+ dimmers are the best I have used; they seem to be compatible with every LED light. It does not matter where you buy them. The products are the same whether purchased at a big box store or electrical supply house. I wish people would stop spreading the myth that products vary by where they are sold.

I will make note of Lutron!

THAT’s IT!!! Lutron was the name on the boxes!!!!! Yep - they are awesome!

@wdccruise - It appears that I need to be very specific in my comments. Yes, "brand A" is the same everywhere it's sold...but...there are differences among various brands. I did NOT state that the switches I purchased were the same brand.

Kinda sorta related, my kitchen designer told me that the Delta faucets sold at the big box stores were not the same quality as the Delta faucets sold at the building supply place. I checked the specs and it was true. More plastic in the faucets at the big box. I returned my big box faucets and went to Ferguson. Too bad I'm learning all this stuff at "a certain age." It would have been useful information to know decades ago! lol
