I would guess a large format, smooth surface tile with matching grout, not contrasting. However, a tiled surface is never going to mimic a solid slab surface. Have you priced tile consistent with the look you are after? I’m not sure the cost difference is going to be that significantly different.

Is white or marbelized subway tile considered modern?

White or marbel look subway tile can be modern, it just depends on the layout of the tile (stacked is more of a modern look than running bond) and the other features surfaces, and decor of the room.

This is glass and marble. Is that a durable material for backsplash? I don’t want something that needs a ton of maintenance.

See if any of the tile stores around you sells tile from Happy Floors or Merola. They have large format tile ( 24 x 48 ) that can be used for backsplash. the tiles have a rectified edge so you can pretty much butt them right next o eachother or do the tiniest grout line.
