Rose thorn fungus?

Yes, I got poked by my precious and beautiful Calypso rose. Now three or four weeks later, my first finger smallest knuckle is red and swollen. No sign of a thorn or scab/wound. What to do? Anybody experience this? Do I have to run to the dr. for a sore knuckle?

Could be sporotrichosis or synovitis. The latter is specially known for causing a type of arthritis if in the joint.

If it doesn't improve soon, yes, you should see a doctor. The infections can get quite nasty and sepsis and amputation are not unheard of in advanced cases.

A good solution made of green soap (palmolive), hydrogen peroxide and very warm water....an old recipe used to heal wounds/infections for many years. It draws all of the infection out.

Use a small bowl add approx 2:1 water:peroxide and a couple good squirts of soap. Soak for 15-20 min. then pat dry and finish by air drying (do not cover). You can do this 2-3 times a day as needed. You will be amazed how fast it heals. Good luck : )

eta.. re-read your message and missed the ’no wound’ part..sorry. You state no thorn, but it sounds like something is in there. Not sure if you are squeemish or not but you could try taking a stetilized needle and make a small hole and squeeze to see if anything comes out...follow by good soaking.

I am puzzeld by the time lag

I have had 2 unpleasant incidents with initally small wounds,

one was a rose thorn getting into my index finger knuckle

the other a stem of Calamagrostis going straight into the hand near a knuckle,

with the rose one it got thick and hurt awfully the next day, despite my applying a special salve (with desinfectant)

the doc said the thorn had probaly gotten too near/ too deep into the actual joint

I got some kind of splint and a course of anti biotics,

after the Calamagrostis (which got better just with soaking and creame/ salve) I ALWAYS carry around with me some desinfectant (iodine-stuff)

If it is not too complicated I would rather show it to some doctor, I am really weary of stuff concerning the joints

Lin whatever you are most comfortable with doing...there is definitely something in there that needs to come out.

this post reminds me a lot of the mushroom ID posts ... really now.. dont rely on strangers on the web ....

i probably hate spending money on DR's as much as you do ... but sooner or later.. you do what you gotta do ...

one thing that crossed my mind.. as the furnace is destroying humidity in the house.. and my hand are starting to dry, redden and crack from dish soap etc ... are your hands otherwise irritated??? ... which perhaps is further irritating this???

and i dont know why you threw fungus in the title ... it could be quite misleading in the hunt for information.. unless you know something we dont ...

look at the first link here .. and go figure it is a fungus.. whats that all about.. lol ...

    https://duckduckgo.com/?q=rose+thorn+in+knuckle&t=ffab&ia=web

peruse some of the other links .... also

probably ought to get it checked out ....

and ask for a pair of leather gauntlet rose gloves for xmas .. as i moved away from roses.. they were great for the fireplace and fire pit ... lol

    ken

but dont ever leave them out in the rain ... mine were pretty heavy leather.. and if it gets wet.. you may never soften them again ....

Get it checked by a medically qualified person. This is possibly more than just a splinter. There are a couple of things that can be quite nasty caused by rose thorns, as Gardengal said. And one of them, Sporotrichosis, is indeed caused by a fungus.

"and i dont know why you threw fungus in the title"

Because fungal infections arising from being stuck by a rose and other thorny plants is a well known phenomenon to experienced gardeners. And you can also develop sporotrichosis from contact with soil and especially peat moss if with a small cut or open wound on your hand.

If one is NOT familiar with the topic, why bother responding??

I wanted feedback about the troublesome fungus!!! That's why I mentioned it... I was thinking that was worst case scenario... I was able to see my PA; she had x-rays done. The joint is fine and she thinks it's my RA acting up more than anything. Taking prednisone now. We'll see. She said the rose issues can get pretty ugly sometimes and so to not ignore it if the swelling and pain don't go away. Thanks, everybody!!!

    good for you

and guess what, after reading your stuff I remembered another thorn-injury thingy of mine, ridiculously small in the beginning, a Berberis-thorn poking into my rigt hand thumb near the hand, before the joint

    did not turn red

I put on ointment/salve with desinfectant, for 2 days

after three weeks it is a small lump under the skin which hurts quite a bit when pressed lightly,

    sooo

I have an appointment on Monday to have it looked at...

    have a nice Sunday everyone
