Dining area help

last modified: 4 years ago

Any suggestions on what to do with this space/wall (wall with plants, wine cabinet & mirror). Furniture, wall decor, etc suggestions?

There are some pictures of our kitchen, dining & living room area too…all are still work in progress. This wall has me stumped though. Trying to go for a cozy transitional vibe. Right now there is a lot of greys and whites and have pulled a moody seaform color accents from a photo in our dining room. However, with the light colored walls and white kitchen cabinets it kind of feels too one toned in that area. *I was thinking of painting the pantry door in the kitchen a dark grey and swapping out the corner cabinet door to a glass cabinet door to break up all the white. Thoughts on that?

I was considering putting up wallpaper on this wall (photo attached). Would this be too much?

Is this wine cabinet too small?

The console table seems kind of dark. I would boost up the height of the plants in the corner and add two buffet lamps on either side of the mirror.

That wall could have handled a much larger sideboard at least 72"

@BeverlyFLADeziner I totally agree on the size of the sideboard. I really liked this one because it displays wine bottles & hanging wine glasses but open to getting a new one if I cant make this one work. If we put up the grey/blue wallpaper I was thinking of painting the wood white in the cabinet

Other than at dinner parties, where do you usually have a glass of wine? Maybe the cabinet is in the wrong room. Not a fan of wallpaper here. The only wall suitable for it might be the one with the large tree art.

@decoenthusiaste if not a cabinet, what would you put in this space? The wall with the tree art flows into our sunroom and is a much larger wall.

I love the round mirror. I would either leave it as it is or use a longer buffet and move the plant. I can not see another way for real balance.

It really looks lovely as it is.

@amykath thank you for your feedback & suggestions! It really is a weird wall to get balanced. I like your mock up!

@amykath has the right idea. A much better solution and no tree to collect dust!

I think you need color. A colorfull abstract painting instead of the mirror.

@doods I agree this space needs some color too. Do you think that the wallpaper that has a little color would be too much?

Hi Rachael, I'm not a pro so can't envision things. What you have there now is pleasing to my eye, I like your plants there, the wine cabinet for you is useful. The mirror while nice I find a little stark. Not sure about wallpaper. Oh I see you have art on the other wall in the dining area. What about a small floating shelf with a couple of colorful ceramic decor items, and maybe another small plant to tie in with your floor plants?

Rachel, you could paint just that wall or even use grasscloth in that one space. I would no get anything busy for wall paper. I like the flow of colors and the pieces you have in your home. They flow very nicely.

@doods this is a mock up of maybe what the wallpaper would look like. I was thinking floating shelves too might be nice to add some height to the wall since there is so much blank space at the top of the wall. Maybe a piece of art instead of a mirror though

    Not crazy about the wallpaper.

I am with doods. It does not blend with your other warm colors. I would find something with depth in color. I would also use a painting and not a mirror. Maybe shelves that go to the floor? They look lost in space there. I am sorry. I do not mean to be harsh. Just my opinion. You have to do what looks best to you not please us.

@amykath No, you’re not being harsh at all! I appreciate the feedback!

@doods & @amykath what about painting it this color? Would that be too much or too matchy with the tree wall art on the other wall? I used the SW color snap tool & used the picture with the wallpaper & it kind of gave it a cool texture. Maybe the painter could create a faux grasscloth texture with the paint. Some mock up photos I did based on your feedback. Thoughts?

I love the wallpaper. I do not know why but the black and white art is not working for me. Again, just my taste. I wonder if a floor lamp might look nice instead of shelves. I love lamps!

No shelves or wallpaper and suggest just working with wall’s shape and size to create a more balanced feel.

I think a larger buffet with a painting that has some color is the best look.
