Bluish color makes me think it’s glauca or bigberry manzanita. I have one that is 14 years old and about 8 feet tall.

With some 50+ species and countless hybrids, it may take an expert to pin down an exact species or cultivar. But I'd look at A. canescens or columbiana for a place to start.

And transplanting a mature plant from the ground to a container is rarely a very successful undertaking. It works much better if the plant is a seedling rather than a relatively large shrub. Just too much root loss and disruption for a larger plant to contend with.......unless a very generously sized container.

Also, as long as the soil is well draining and moderately acidic, I don't find manzanitas all that fussy about soil conditions. They are common landscape plantings along much of the west coast and thrive in ordinary garden soil. Even organically enriched garden soil.

@gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) Do you have any thoughts on a target pH for the soil? Is that consistent across many species and cultivars?

Most ericaceous plants will grow in a wide range of pH conditions as long as they are on the acidic side of the scale. I have never consciously amended the soil pH for this genus and it thrives in our slightly (6.5) to moderately acidic (5.5) indigenous soils. Good drainage is far more of a concern than pH.
