Help with backsplash

I am truly struggling with the backsplash. I am leaning towards a cream subway tile. My main dilemma is where to stop the tile at the vent hood. Do I keep the way it is? Raise it to the crown molding or tile the whole back wall?

I think I would stop this at the bottom of the range hood unless you want to do the entire wall above the cabinets as well. The best point in this situation seems to be bottom edge of range hood. I don't think where it stops now is great, nor do I think a stripe of tile going to the ceiling just around the hood would be great either.

I would paint that white strip behind range hood to match the wall and leave it as it is - assuming this has already been done.

Is it tiled already? If so, would keep it and change the wall paint first. Is the ceiling white or a color? If so,would paint that white.

Stopping it below the range hood makes sense.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback! It has not been done yet. The whole kitchen feels off after painting the cabinets. I assumed it was the backsplash, but perhaps the paint is the issue. The ceilings are not white.

Hi Lisa. The cabinets look great! Did you paint them yourselves??! I would definitely start with the wall and ceiling-- lots less work, mess, and expense than tiling :) You can still have the option to change the tile later if paint doesn't do the trick and will be able to see whether a creamy subway tile will fight with the floor and counter (though a bit hard to see either in the photos).

Yes to updating the travertine BS. What the granite? Can we have a close up?

I may be in the minority but I think the backsplash looks nice with the cabinets, counters, and floors. I think I would paint the ceiling the same white as the cabinets and then reevaluate the rest. I wonder if you could do a different wall color, but not sure how this room relates to the rest of the house

I think a cream subway tile to the underneath of the vent would look great, but I would paint the ceiling white first and then see how you feel about the backsplash. The thing thats throwing my eye with the backsplash at the range section is the strip of moulding at the top painted white. I think if it was painted matching the walls that would be a much nicer transition from the tile to the wall as I don't mind the tile at all. I think it adds warmth to the space and also goes with your counters quite nicely.

Ceiling painted and tile removed above range hood

Wow the white ceiling makes a huge difference. Thank you for doing that. It really helps to see!

are you up for painting the ceiling white?

I'd prob redo your pantry door to a type of wood, maybe a antique style w/glass.

could be a single or a double. you'd have to look at Wood Pantry Doors, but I think it would make a diff.

But number 1 thing I would change, vent hood.

Personally I think your vent hood is the wrong style for this kitchen. it's too modern looking. Do a vent hood that matches your cabinets. Then take the tile right up under it.

Let me show you mine. I had mine painted and they made the vent hood for me. I have low ceilings, but this style would certainly work w/yours

colors don't match, but you get the idea. here's the vent hood, a wood pantry door (I'd match the wood on your island)

I'd prob run a piece of wood like your island, as a trim piece on the vent hood. I used walnut on mine, but I have walnut elsewhere in my kitchen. you have a lighter wood.

who painted your cabs? they could prob make you the vent hood for another 1500 or so. get your insert first and they build around it. Sell the hood you have and get some money back.

a sisal runner w/cream trim, and this tile

Cloe makes a cream color (not their white) that is very similar to this Portmore. (this is found on Tilebar or under IvyHill on Wayfair or home depot)

here's the Cloe in the cream color:

    Bedrosians Zenis 2x6 in Solar

Tilebar also has this off-white w/more of a distressed edge

found a lighter one. of course you don't have to have the kitchy etched glass. I'd do the wood, a type of salvage look, with some glass. you could do seeded or frosted if you like. it wouldn't cost too much

    love something like this too.

That looks great! Thank you for taking the time to do this! So helpful. I never considered the antique door—nice touch! Great suggestions!

I agree on the ceiling….it will be a large task as it runs throughout the entire lower level of the house. Would you do a flat white? The cabinets are BM white dove. The trim is sw creamy. The current wall color is SW kilm beige, the neighboring rooms are sw nomadic desert. I would probably paint the walls too.

If the crown molding is the same white as the cabinets, I would paint the ceiling the color of the crown molding, you don't need to introduce another white.

redid the vent hood w/the wood. and a diff door w/seeded glass. I like it!

Paint the ceiling a regular ceiling white. ceilings will look darker, so don't paint it the same as the cabinets. just do a regular white base they make for ceilings

agree about the chandelier over the island. what if you brought in something w/texture? and then did a sisal runner?

    Otherwise, do two pendants

I would match the ceiling paint to the crown moulding.
This is my hood vent. I agree with bringing in more wood accents, you could do something in this style and put some wood trim at the bottom section. And I’m not sure about that chandelier. Doesn’t tie in with anything else in the room.

    Tile.

    Get a bunch of samples.

Tilebar has 5 for $5. This is one of theirs. Lancaster Vanilla

    https://www.tilebar.com/lancaster-3x6-vanilla-polished-ceramic-tile.html

montauk Sand Dune (which IvyHill also carries at HD)

    https://www.tilebar.com/montauk-sand-dune-2x8-ceramic-wall-subway-tile.html

also comes in the 4x4 in a Fog color

But I'd gather 5 of the samples from Tilebar since they're so cheap.

Look around for some others you like

then put up some white paper and lay them out like this
