Warm white for low natural light: BM Timid White, Crisp Linen, Navajo

I am going crazy looking into paint colors and would love your help! I would like the look of a warm white/off-white that doesn’t look dingy in our space with low natural light. We have plenty of windows but tons of shade. We have 3K cans and additional light fixtures.

Part of our problem is that the SW and BM color-match samples from Lowe’s/HD are not true representations of the actual color when we get whites mixed (we have checked), so we are relying on Samplize (which is taking forever and poses some additional logistical challenges).

We have BM Acadia White on our kitchen walls (and I love it there) but I’m not sure it’s quite right for the living room, hallway and vaulted entry. I cant pinpoint why exactly… too bright/yellow?

Here are some samples we have tried: SW Alabaster (too white), SW White Duck (too grey), SW mayonnaise (almost seems pink in some lights) and SW Shoji White (too grey).

Do any of you have thoughts/advice/experience to share about the following colors, especially in spaces without natural light?

  • BM Timid White
  • BM Navajo White (I’m worried this may be too beige for our tastes)
  • BM Crisp Linen (I can’t seem to find many examples of this online)

FYI our trim is SW Alabaster.

Living room: BM Edgecomb Grey

Kitchen: SW Alabaster trim, BM acadia white walls, unknown cabinet color

Entry/hall: BM Edgecomb Grey

I used BM Timid White in my basement which has windows, but the windows are on the north wall, so it's pretty dark. It definitely looks yellow (although it's a very light color, almost white), so if you aren't looking for that, you won't like it. I love it - it is exactly what I was looking for. It gives kind of a candlelight effect.

How about Grand Teton White, AC-42? I haven't tried it, but it looks like a darker version of Acadia White. By the way, BM is having a sale on their samples for the next couple days, 50% off when you order them online. I still have a lot of painting to do, so I know I am going to go crazy with that.

The pillows look like an excellent color for the room. Hold up a living room pillow to your Acadia White kitchen walls. If they coordinate well, buy a can of Acadia White and paint one wall in the living room.

It is possible to overdo the search for the perfect white for multiple rooms. It will never be the same color in each room, nor will it be the same color at different times of day and different times of year. Your light bulbs and shades also affect the color perception. Choosing a white you already love is often the way to get what you want for the whole house.

@apple_pie_order I agree about the pillows- that’s essentially what I’m going for. The kitchen is a bit different.

@kandrewspa Thank you so much for the tip about the samples - so helpful!! I also appreciate your thoughts on Timid White. It’s tough when all the example pics you see online have great lighting :)

I tried a sample quart of Crisp Linen recently Because it is full spectrum ( no gray) there is a lightness and vividness to it that I really liked and I think would be good for low light situations (which makes most whites look dingy and gray) However depending on lighting, time of day, and what other colors are around and bouncing off of it - it can vary wildly in how yellow (or white, or in some instances a pleasant very light beigey-brown) it looks. Some people like the changeable-ness of full spectrum. Im not sure I do but like it enough to move ahead and try out on a wall or 2 - I think I need to see a wider area to understand what it will do.

@Debbie Downer that sounds very promising about Crisp Linen... Unfortunately I can't order a sample of that through Benjamin Moore, not sure why. It just shows that it's not available.

You can get BM Crisp Linen through Sampilize (be careful, though, there is a SW color of the same name.

i am in the same color boat!

i ordered samplize and they arrived the next day.

The one in the middle is the crisp linen. i know its not very helpful like this . i am liking either that or white dove. though when i put them on my wall, crisp linen is looking more yellow and white dove is looking greyish.

I have had Timid White in my living room and hallway for 20 years in a low light situation and it definitely reads as a pale soft yellow which is fine for most of the day but early evening for about an hour and a half it flashes very yellow/gold which is why I'm changing it. Does anyone know if Acadia White does the same thing as they both have yellow undertones

I have BM Crisp Linen in my bedroom which faces south. In the early morning light like around 7am it is a pale yellow, shortly after and for the rest of the day and evening it is a light off white ivory, very similar to the middle strip in Lavendars first picture.
