So I might suggest something with an Asian influence? I think it would work well with the plants, the sleek floating fireplace, and the wood console style. This room has an interesting, calm feeling.

What is your style? I looked at “contemporary” on great big canvas.com and found these. You can get them in long rectangular.

The area is already filled with rectangles; perhaps something sculptural would break that monotony. Repeating the triangle motif of the credenza might work if the scale is right.

Everything is very neutral, and linear. I'd do something abstract and bright and curvy:

I'd  suggest stop looking on line and hit local galleries and exhibitions instead.  Art has to reach out and grab you, which to me means it has to be up close and personal.  Colour, texture, technique, finesse, don't always come across in the on line world.  If it hasn't worked for you up to now, it's time to take a different approach.

I searched “watercolors” on Art.com. Maybe something that is the opposite of your modern/MCM look?

I like the work of Nikolai Astrup. You might take a look at it. One other thought, you could commission a piece. A friend of mine really likes the work of one of his friends/acquaintances and comissioned a piece. He's thrilled about it (not a well known artist, he just like the work). Love to see what you pick out!

You have a lot of horizontals, so I’d consider hanging three vertical pieces. I’m fascinated by images of passageways between buildings and stairways (where would this lead me?), so I like this grouping. I’d put the wooden staircase in the center, and choose the largest size to fill the wall space. Art is very personal, but it’s fun to make suggestions :)

Original art can be expensive, especially larger pieces. I posted photography printed on canvas sold by Great Big Canvas. I’ve bought both photographs and paintings printed on canvas (not famous works of art) from them. The original art I own was either painted by family members or art passed down in my family. If you want original art, I’d watch for local art fairs to get an idea of prices and meet artists. Also, look online for art fairs that list contributing artists to find artist websites.

Only you know what your "style" is and you won't know it until you see it. Shop local art fairs and galleries. Lesser-known local artists do have appealing original works at a fraction of the price of the big- name artists. There is LOTS of reproduction art out there - these are commercial, mass-produced prints, and IMO suitable only for doctors' office waiting rooms. Get to know media - that is, oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolor, pastel, etc. There are no rules, except that a space as big as your usually looks best with a larger piece.

If your fireplace is electric, and you never use it with a heating element, hanging any type of art over it should be fine. If it is wood burning, gas (or electric with the heat feature used) it is not the best idea to hang canvas paintings, or any paintings done on paper, etc. - over a fireplace.

Overall, I suggest not displaying any paintings (of any significant sentimental or monetary value) over a heat generating element, such as a fireplace.
