    Lol Paula!

Very nice Earth Angel jocl17! It happens if the cursor is in the wrong position. I think we have all probably done it. I know I have.

Beth I wish my garden were as tidy. Eternal Flame is particularly lovely.

The fridge door should be closed so you ca't see it.

Ez does it at work. I don't go back until Wednesday. Its tough when you have to burn your vacation hours around the holidays.

Nice Es so far. Emerald Ruff Cut grew great for me for a couple years then dwindled to nothing. I'm very tempted to replace it as it is such a beauty. Anyone know of a similar one that grows better? Perhaps Amalia and friends.

Ho Hum another blushing yellow (that I absolutely want). Shouldn't yellow blushed with red be orange? Where are the orange Hostas?

Only one E here and it appears to be popular. El Nino is pretty old (like 10 years), but a bit dwarfed - deep shade and under an overhanging roof-line probably contribute, On the plus side, it keeps its blue color longer than pretty much everything else I have.

Hosta.maker, these red-tinted hostas are coming fast and furious now. It looks really good and natural with the gold in your Electric Fire.

It all depends upon the genetics and type of anthocyanin.

anthocyanin is quite a volatile compound it will change colors quite quickly under certain conditions. it can also dissolve and reabsorb into the leaf quickly as well. the plant usess it as a defense aginst stresses. it is bio synthetic so much of it accumulates in the sub veins. and desperse out from there. its seen mostly in young emerging tissue as after the cells mature the anthocyanin absorbs and dissolves probably recycled into energy from the sugars.

used by many plants and fruits. ie a sun blushed apple. i have seen some incredible things that ithought was not possible.

i have a new one year old where the blush on the yellow appears quite orange. and that new first blush sport out of denmark is incredibly dark purple in the center and green on the margin.

bob solbergs new peach brandy says it blushes but i assume the brandy means brown hues.

Love the Electric Fire and everybody's Emerald Ruff Cut!

    Only two for me.....

First, I have to say all the Earth Angels are just beautiful as are the Emerald Ruff Cuts. I almost bought ERC but then I found Amalia which I have been wanting. I hope it rivals ERC.

jocl17, your El Niño is very nice. Your Empress Wu didn’t post. It’s an all green hosta. Sometimes posting the pics and then adding your labels works better.

Beth, I can’t wait until my Eternal Flame is as full as yours. Your Empress Wu is lovely.

Saija, I am drooling over your El Niño.

peren, did someone call you Laurie???? It’s ok if you don’t want to answer that……both your EN and ERC are to die for as usual…..

hosta_maker, I love that Electric Fire 🔥!!!! Wow keep them coming! Also thanks for the science lesson……very, very, interesting!

Steve, I also was able to spot the cat within 3 seconds…….maybe because I have cats. ;-)

Mosswood, your El Niño is also beautiful. I am waiting for mine (1 yr) to grow up. My understanding was it’s tolerant of sun so that’s where I planted it…… first leaves burned and I had to protect it. Then the second flush came up without burning. I hope it hardens off this summer.

Mbug…….really???? Only 2??? Of course they are both worthy of the Hosta Library!

Utog, you have a nice sized Elegans and I am happy to see your Etched Glass because I just bought one!!

nw, your Empress Wu is a very good looking hosta…..it looks great in your yard….. so glad it survived the branch falling!

Yes Debra and thank you. sandyslopes, sherrygirl and Pieter use my name (Laurie) and you can too if you like! That also includes anyone else.

Paula, my fride still looks like that too……there’s often a green fuzzy in there, hahahaha

    Now my Es:

Planted with ashes of my beloved cat Braveheart (didn’t know there was a Braveheart hosta at the time)

i will wait until the new ones are registered. i'll get final measurements and pics this summer.

unfortunately the tc process and growing them out takes 2-3 years before nurseries get them.

i will sell the first batch myself in the 2nd year.

Good ones Paula! I like that pizza! I had a hard time finding that cat!

I still have a lot of plastic containers. I liked it when my daughter used them to take her lunch in. They had a policy at work that everything left in the fridge on Friday was thrown out. Everything! They would throw out glass containers, lunch bags, the works! Ticked me off. I paid good money for some of the better containers. So I liked it when my daughter took the plastic used containers so I didn't worry if she left it there. Unfortunately, one day, she took the wrong container. She had sour cream for lunch!

I think everyone's Earth Angel look wonderful!

Debra your Emerald Tiara is just perfect!

Earth Angel end of June. Not sure why it has the browning edges. Maybe not enough water.

    Emerald Necklace

Etched Glass. Picture taken mid June. Purchased in 2020.

    So many beautiful EA's, EW's and EN's

    Electric Fire is terrific!

mbug nice to see Envy, it is quite attractive. I don't recall seeing it before.

    utog good to see Electrocution

Debra that is one happy Emerald Tiara.

nhl not often we see Emerald Necklace and that Etched Glass is perfect.

djacobz Idon't know what to say about my pic of Empress Wu. Three years of photos of this hosta are the same color. Zillis does say that this hosta is medium green and blueish early. Since all photos were taken in mid July (not early) this maybe something else. What I don't know.

Hmm jocl17. I think your pic is Empress Wu but you labelled it as El Nino. There was no pic of El Nino.

    last modified: 4 years ago

jocl17, peren Peren, is correct. You just mislabled your picture and you showed your beautiful Earth Angel twice. I don’t have Wu so I didn’t catch that your El Niño was Wu. You aalso posted your Earth twice and labled it Wu and I just knew it wasn’t a 2 color hosta. I have an El Niño myself but didn’t catch the mistake like peren. Posting on houzz is a pain……I still use the garden web to post stuff. For some reason Ican’t post my photos in the app. I am not being critical. Just wanting to help as many of us have NOIDS (myself included) that we aren’t sure about.

newhostalady & peren, thanks for tht compliment on Emerald Tiara. I t was very pretty this year..

nhl, love your Etched Glass……happy I just ordered it!

    sweetbetsy, beautiful Empress Wu

Oh, the cat doesn't belong in the fridge? I just thought the door should be closed to keep it fresh. Lovely Emerald Tiara, I just may have to pull the trigger on that one. Its been in my cart a few times. Should be easy to find a place to tuck it in.

My Earth Angel has struggled with some bacterial leaf rot thing the past couple years. I keep treating for it but haven't gotten rid of it yet. It looks best early in the season.

Effervescence looks great early in the spring, but starts to wash out and burn for me. Perhaps it just needs another year to adjust.

Electrocution - a new one for me last year.

Emerald Charger in year 2 after struggling through its first year.

Enduring Beacon that starts yellow and stays yellow.

Lovely soft yellow of an English Sunrise

My photos of 4 "E's' are more mixed up than I thought. I'll limit myself to one photo/ post

Steve, as usual your hostas are lovely…….love Etched Glass which I ordered. Enduring Beacon reminds me of Prairie Moom. Nice yellow, elongated leaves……very pretty!

    debra

Some great E's, wish I could say the same. My Empress Wu has declined steadily the past few years and doubt it will appear next spring, no idea what is wrong unless lack of sun. I will replace it, possibly plant it in a half whiskey barrel. Earth Angel has been strugling forever.

A few here that are holding their own.

jocl17, it also might be helpful to post the picture first, then type in the name of the hosta?

Steve, how long have you had Etched Glass. It's growing beautifully---even right beside a tree!

    last modified: 4 years ago

Well, since you asked. It started life here in July 2019 as a good sized single eye plant.

Took a step back in size in 2020, but with more eyes, not that unusual for me. By July it had started growing better.

Grew very well that year and filled in nicely in afternoon sun by Sept. 20th.

Still not back to size last year, but started the season well. Here it is in June, bigger and better than last year. Previous post was in July.

Enduring Beacon is not the soft yellow of Prairie Moon, much bolder. It looks softer in May when the pics were taken. It even comes up a little chartreuse before getting brighter.

I found a July pic, but it still has the chartreuse look in this very shady spot.

with Abiqua Trumpet and Smoky Mountains.

    Very nice Envy o_d.

Steve, I see some differences with these pics, but PM gets a bit chartreuse towards August. I will post pictures when P comes around.
    debra

Sure, somewhat similar at times, but what my pictures aren't capturing is Enduring Endeavor is a bolder yellow that stays yellow. While Prairie Moon is one of the most beautiful soft yellow Hosta in Spring quickly becoming chartreuse and even green in my garden.

Thank you for the extra pictures of Etched Glass, Steve. It's beautiful. I don't think Etched Glass did a step back in 2020. Isn't it just that some hosta will explode into more eyes, but smaller ones? Then the growth spurt continues on. I think your Etched Glass is doing very well!

It did eventually grow well in 2020. I meant it was much smaller as the season began. I remember being disappointed in the size when it appeared and even wondering if it would survive or perhaps the plant was just a dog. The two pics I showed from 2020 are from July 9th and Sept. 20th. So by July it had already started growing better. Before that it wasn't even worth a pic.

Everyone comments on Elegans when they see my garden. Just goes to show you a solid hosta can be the star of the show!
