Small Master Bathroom Layout

Dear Community,

our family just started to build a house and while geodesists are checking the land, my wife and I are practicing our designers skills and getting familiar with AutoCAD.

Our master bathroom is 3400mm X 3200mm and I just finished a first draft of its layout. With a lack of experience, I did research on the standard distances and used some common sense (e.g. shower is closer to window so it has more ventilation). Also, the false walls for shower/toilet and sink are from floor-to-ceiling and their width is based on the Duravit requirements.

From the constraints point of view, I think we are flexible except one fat big one - a bathtube. As I absolutely hate bathtubs and my wife is obviously the biggest fun of it, we reached a compromise - the bathtube must be standalone in order not to look too boring.

Is there any chance you could have a look on the attached layout and give any feedback? Do you thing all openings are wide enough for an average adult?

IMO free standing tubs area PITA to get in and out of and work only in huge bathrooms with tons of space all around . You seem to have a large bathroom for no real reason BTWyou need an architect to design a house with the interior and exterior designed together The batroom IMO is not the first space that I would design. Forget autocad and get an architect . Ventilation in a bathroom is best handles with proper venting not an open window . Be very careful to recognize you do not know what you do not know.

Thank you for a good advise with an architect - we have one! I want to make sure we start with the architect with what we want explained in a coherent way and then see what needs to be adjusted.

It looks like the space between the tub and sink is too narrow at 33". Do you need a tub?

    Some thoughts:

    1. The door swing on that shower will make getting in terrible; reverse it.

    2. Why do you need a space for the toilet that is so large...larger than the shower?

    3. You actually have a lot of space, but it's poorly used, especially with the free-standing tub plunked right in the middle of the room. You could turn the tub 90 degrees and move it to the wall with the windows; you could turn the toilet 90 degrees, move it to the left and have a smaller space...maybe a toilet room if you need privacy; and after you've moved the tub to the right and the toilet to the left, you'll have room for a larger shower with an easily accessible door in the center where the tub used to be.

    4. Bottomline: re-think this whole layout: there are so many better uses of the space that will make it more functional, more open, and more attractive.

I think you could make much better use of the space Here's ours 3200mm x 4114mm huge shower freestanding tub WC and a vanity. If you deleted the linen shelves and shortened the vanity I think you would be closer to 3200 x 3400

If you want a really good design work with an architect and interior designer and do your homework. Figure out and document all of your needs, wants and nice to haves.

Study and document your current home and how you live/function in your current space. Document every detail and develop your list of needs/wants/nice to haves.

The more information the architect and interior designer know about your needs and how you use space the better equipped they will be at meeting your needs and designing a space that functions well for your family.

As for the tub, free standing bath tubs are pretty, but they take up a lot of space because they need clearance all around the tub so you can clean around them. An alcove tub will provide the same functionality and take less space and may be more comfortable. The choice should be left up to the person who will be using the tub. Functionality is far more important than aesthetics.

Thank you all for the great feedbacks and suggestions! Considering all the points, i have reworked the draft to have more "habitants-friendly" layout of our future master bathroom.
