Orangecamera's Kitchen Update - Before and After

The old kitchen. Pickled oak (I think?) cabinets, with a dark green Corian countertop and integrated double sink. Notice the green Corian "racing stripe" around the backsplash.

We kept most of the existing cabinets, but replaced the doors and drawer fronts with Formica clad slabs. To the right of the sink, we got rid of the 9" spice drawer in favor of a double trash can drawer. Although it looks smaller in the pictures, the new stainless steel single sink is exactly the same size of the old double sink, and is much more user-friendly.

The wide trim around the window is gone, in favor of having wider cabinets on both sides. The new thin trim is painted orange (of course!!!). New backspash, obviously! And we added undercabinet tape lighting.

Above the double wall ovens, before and ....

After! Now I can reach everything without a step stool.

Our cabinetmaker and I worked together to design a movable "island" that is also the cat-feeding station. It tucks in under the handle of the lower oven, but can be easily moved away when necessary. That seemingly small extra counter space has come in very handy.

The coffee station before and after. Also, had my light (from my old house) installed.

And I reupholstered the chairs.

You're so right, @AnnKH. Between the few inches of new width of those cabinets and the extra surface on the island, the kitchen has become much more useable.

LOVE the orange around the window and the can feeding station. Such a brilliant idea!

Very fun, thanks for sharing! I stole a screenshot of your cabinet above the ovens.

@jaja06, I got that idea from someone else, too, so I'm glad to "pay it forward". Most of the ones I saw had the uprights on the bottom and a shelf up at the top, but I would never be able to reach it!

@Lyndee Lee Thank you. I must have ordered 30 samples before I found "the one". To anyone out there planning changes, I encourage you to take your time and pick what you really want instead of settling for "close enough".

@arcy_gw I'm hoping not to know about resale value of this kitchen for a long time. We just moved in 10 months ago!

@M Riz, thank you. Speaking of organization, I can't believe I forgot to post these other before and after pictures!

We moved the upper shelf up, and replaced the lower with a box. The box has one partition in it, so cutting boards live there neatly (they used to take up valuable real estate on the counter before). The other part is where we toss the plastic containers - realistically we'll never stack them neatly so the bin makes sense.

An organized kitchen is an easy to clean kitchen love it, i have the same type of pullout for my cutting boards and my workstation sink accessories. Pretty much everything in my kitchen has a logical spot. makes life so much easier.

You have my favorite refrigerator! If it ever breaks, those are worth the repair costs to fix them. I'm still kicking myself for getting a new fridge :) Love your remodel!

@ch47gunnergirl my mom jokes that we bought the house because of the refrigerator!

In general it looks quite good. I'm on the fence about the blue backsplash. it's a bit overpowering perhaps especially since the grout lines are so pronounced.

LOVE all the storage! I think the backsplash is a really nice pop of color! It would look great with some additional accent pieces to tie it in

@FrameMyMirror, I agree. As you might tell from my name (plus the orange painted accents and the orange seat covers, orange is my favorite color. We've put in several orange accents in the kitchen, now.
