I think you would need a bit more space to have room for a chair, side table, lamp, bookcase without blocking the doors.

You could elevate those plants on a small table to make cleaning and plant care easier.

Certainly some room for shelves or cabinets in that corner if you need storage.

Or space for a sculpture or other art piece.

Usually call the top of the stair a landing.

I'd call it a stair landing and it's not big enough for furniture. A square rug perhaps? Be sure to include a rug pad so it doesn't slip. I'd add artwork on the largest wall, which appears to be the non-photographed wall on the right hand side of the stairs as you walk up. I'd also find a better spot or a small table for the plants. Thinking about your lovely wood floors and stains from the planters.

I don’t know anything about your family, but my daughter’s upstairs landing is very similar to yours. She used it to ”store” in a somewhat decorative way, various overflow items from the kids’ rooms. Over the years she has had combinations of book shelves, toy boxes, acquariom, cat scratching post, easel, art displays, and puzzle tables there. As the kids grew, the area changed, but it always looked like a comfortable, albeit small space.
