I haven't driven to a dealer for almost 30 years. I called a dealership and had them put a part (needle threader for the Bernina) in a box and mail it to me, and I paid with my credit card over the phone. The person on the other end said, "You'll void the warrantee." I said, "yeah, I'm shaking in my boots, here."

I'm not hard on sewing machines. No worries. The warrantee would expire before I break something. There are also reputable companies who sell replacement parts online. Just look for good ratings from their customers.

The immediate challenge (not problem!) I see is that you're going to make a quilt, and the presser foot you intend to use may not give you that perfect 1/4" seam quilters desire. In the picture, it looks wider. The opening in the foot is wider, too. I don't know enough about quilting to tell you if that will affect (effect? I never know) how precisely your two pieces stitch together. I'm a solution-oriented woman. When I needed to put in an invisible zipper and didn't have an invisible zipper foot, I've used a pintucking foot or a regular zipper foot. You quilters are a different sort - very precise and all. I guess test and measure before you start your project. In fact, piece SEVERAL pieces together for an entire block and measure the result, to make sure tiny fractions of an inch won't add up to something unacceptable along the way.

That pin with the black button is for leveling the foot going over thick seams. You can still use it if it's not operational. You can use any foot for anything you want - except zigzagging with any foot designed for only straight stitching.

For crisp seams I have a 1/4" quilting foot.

"I'm a solution-oriented woman"---yes! I once used the zig zag stitch to make a button hole. The length was set to was '0' so it was a satin stitch rather than /\/\/\/\/\

I didn't know that about the black thing either. Glad to know that!

My favorite parts store for my Janome has been Amazon. I bought my machine from Ken's through Amazon. I've also bought many extra presser feet for it, through Amazon. Back at my old house, my nearest dealer was about 25 miles away. Now I have moved and I have a Janome dealer about 5 miles away.

FWIW--I still use the A foot with the bend. Thanks to moral support here I was brave enough, for me, when none of the feet were staying attached to what-ever-the-part-is-named that I tightened several screws and ta da! all is good.
