the only structural thing I'd consider would be a new top . looks like Santa Fe or Colorado.....put a wood top on this. Otherwise use some LED lights on your column or a pendant fixture above the island. Put a cute rustic bench in front of it. Go hunting around your selvage areas locally.

Yes, adding can lights over the island is on the to-do list this year (pix shot at dusk with only living room lamp on). I had considered a rustic bench. I have a small, live-edge bench inside my front door and love it, so I'll will definitely revisit that idea. Thanks!

I bet you could find something interesting to put there.  Maybe a vase or other piece of decor or furniture.  But it's kind of restful and I honestly don't mind it. I would not paint or alter it.

IMO do that in the same wood as the cabinets and why was that not done is my question I deally done by the same cabinet maker would be great .I think some pendant lighting above would also be a good idea not pot lights . The house looks rustic why is there a very fromal trim around the bottom of that post ? I would like to see the whole space in the daytime

The trim around the bottom of the post is rope. There are vigas across the living room ceiling also trimmed in rope as well as rope at the base of a kiva fireplace.
