Hosta I 2021 ............................

Show us your Is today:

To answer a question of where my hostas are. I once had a shaded back yard and we actually got cold in the winter. I had over 300 with the help of this group. My back yard faced a wooded area full of trees. One day I came home to find it had been flattened. Every tree every canna gone as they had never been there. I am still not over it. The city put in a retention pond, ie the lake, We had some pretty good hurricanes soon after that so I was grateful for the lake. Well some of my hostas saw the sun and they gave up on the spot. Packed up and went north. After that it was down hill. Fast. Many returned so small and did not last long. Now I have 4, if you count the one I got this weekend. Sun hostas were at Lowe's right before Christmas. So during the winter they stay outside and go into the shade greenhouse in the summer. It is 44 degrees. I am off to work.

Have a great day everyone!

Iron Gate Glamour finally planted after two years in a pot.

Island Breeze - after getting some good pics the last few years, I ended up with only this and the reason I keep resisting Fire Island.

Paula I remember the pics of the devastation. I had hoped that you had been able to plant shade providers in the years since. Happy you were able to add one more to your collection.

The camouflage & cat cracked me up. Drooling over the 1st pic as well as all the beauties posted!

    Independence

Indigo not too happy with the heat & drought.

Paula……what an awful story you have to tell. So very sorry you had to go through that! I am happy you are back up to 4 and again, than thanks so much for continuing to do the alphabet.

I wanted to add a personal comment. I am finding that I don’ t have pics of several hostas so far….Hanky Panky, Hush Puppy …. posted the wrong pic of Frances Williams…….I think my movement in the gareden was and is restricted due to my hip surgeries, some hostas were too hard to reach for a good photo. Anyway here is my I:

This one get little to no sun

Paula..I'm sending a virtual hug🤗..new neighbors in back made "improvements" that I hate..I feel your pain..

the camouflage pics are amazing..the bear needs to lose weight!..

sharing a 40 year old experience on social media really happens! 😂..

my only I is represented but I'm posting it anyway haha..

    Invincible 6-9-2019

I really like these..they look darker in person than in this pic..maybe it was still early in the season and the foliage wasn't that old..

Now I can add comments. I don’t know what the trick is to post pictures in the houzz app, so I am posting pics in the “ gardenweb” and comments here in the app. It’s a bit crazy 😝

Beth, I am not usually fond of Irish Luck, but yours has a lovely wavy shape….. Island Breeze—-does it come up really bright yellow like mine?

Gchick, you may only have one I like me,but Island Breeze is a good one to have!

Saija, I love the wavy, pointed leaves on Invincible!

Utog, beautiful blue on that Infatuation, who doesn’t Love Ice Cream in October? Nice progression on Inniswood!

Steve, I can’t believe that little I Dream of Jeanne is going to become that huge hosta! Regarding Island Breeze and Fire Island, even though one of my FI pics shows it in sun, it’s only a bit at the end of the day as the sun sets behind rooftops. Also my Island Breeze in in that same situation. Also no direct light except a couple of rays toward late afternoon. Neither one burns on me.

Sunnywood, I love your Imperial Palace……..but I am missing your Ivory Coasts!!!!

Peren, regardless of how the heat affected Indigo, the blue color is gorgeous!

nw, still looking good now, and you two look like kids in your wedding photo. "Taking Care of Business," we rocked out to that, too, but not a wedding song, lol. .... Do I need to delete this later?

    Ann....don't delete!!

utog....thank you for the comment! In fact, a picture of my Inspire Greatness from a few years ago is in the HL.

Paula, I had no idea that you had so many hostas at one time! I bet a lot of us have some City stories. But coming home to all those trees gone must have been heartbreaking. Mine was having a stream paved over to extend our street to build more houses. Progress?

So many great looking hostas, but what else would hosta lovers have?!?

Ivory Queen - slow grower, but one I really like.

    Irish Luck

    Ice Follies

Independence being overtaken by an uncaged Peony.

NW-Ann,,,,I would give you a big heart here if I could.

sandyslopes and mbug..thank you!!!..you gave me fun comments like what I'm getting on FB..

I'm not sure what's best with off topic comments..🤔

I just don't want to "spam" the alphabet..if GW was like FB I think? the author of the post could delete if they wished..that seems best to me..

Ann what a wonderful before & after! I agree you looked like kids then and you both look terrific now.

I don't have Irish Luck to know firsthand..does anyone else think Irish Luck resembles Invincible?..

Shadow and peren..❤..thank you both!..does the heart show in this comment?..

I think this wedding pic is different from formal shots (have those too) and people liked it..he was 23 (almost 24) me 20..we must've looked even younger..not the first time I've heard we look like teenagers..

I am the rule maker here and there are no rules just to have fun. I like the off posts. No reason to delete anything.

thanks Paula!!!..all of us enjoy and appreciate that you host the alphabet!..good to know you don't mind non hosta comments..🙂

    NW, don’t delete!
    Congratulations!
My husband and I have been together for 28 years.

NW, Irish Luck is an Invincible sport.

NW, so nice you shared that wonderful history with us! you are both still kids!

    Sherry

    utog..Congratulations on 28 years!..you'll catch me someday!..

that makes sense that Irish Luck and Invincible are related!..

there's lots of hosta info that I don't know 😂..

Sherry..thank you!!..maybe our faces still read "younger" just as they seemed too years ago..but our knees, shoulders, backs etc aren't kids anymore 😂..

Debra here is a picture of my Island Breeze 6/1 it is more green than yours. Mine gets morning sun, it is under a spruce which is slowly dyeing. I am guessing I will need to move it once we have the tree cut down.

Ann - please keep your pictures in the thread. My first thought was "such cute kids" and you both have aged gracefully.

    Beth..thank you! ❤..I'm loving everyone's compliments 😂..

I've often noticed my hosta are darker than other gardeners..no problem..beautiful to me ❤..they're doing the best they can..😂

💓 Here you go NW- I just learnt something 💞

Shadow..thanks for the heart!..here's one for you ❤..I think on Gardenweb I used to type symbols and the posted result was a box with an x in it..

watch out now!..our threads will be fancy 😂..

Nicholsworth, your wedding picture is so sweet! Congratulations on your 47 years of marriage! Still looking great today!

Paula, the tree removal must have been shocking. I can understand that you haven't gotten over it yet! What is not very well understood, is that trees on neighboring properties can and do affect each neighbor. The city should have given the neighbors some notice at the very least. Where i am, I don't think all the trees would have been removed, and definitely some young trees would have been planted surrounding the new lake.

When I went to our city council to ask to have one of my trees removed, a councillor asked me if I would move the said tree into the corner of my property if I could. I said "no" because my back neighbor would not be able to have his vegetable garden and my adjacent neighbor would lose her pollinator's garden due to the lack of sun. Imagine how angry my neighbors would be with me if I could move the tree! It still ticks me off that the neighbor planted a large growing tree on his property that is going to shade my property as it grows and not his!

Unfortunately I only have one "I" hosta and I didn't take a picture of it! So I've nothing to add.

    Nice hosta everyone!

Mbug, are you Bert Malkus then? You don’t have to answer that if you don’t want to…..
Nicholsworth, you look like teens at your wedding!! And you two still look great together! Nice Ivory Queen and beautiful Ice Follies.

irish luck is a seedling of invincible.

it's very similar to my glossy ruffles which also is a seedling of invincible.

pollen on mine is not recorded but it's more than likely came from stingray, which was planted next to it when i gathered seed.

like mine it doesn't set seed. both are probably triploids.

i have a sibling that is even larger.

Ann - like the others, I love seeing the pics and hearing the stories.

Loving all the comments. Honestly I get tired of wading through all the Hosta pics just to get to the comments.

steve..thank you 💕..I wanted everyone to know my "wedding post" made me smile as opposed to the melancholy of losing my parents..it was nice to have some fun..

I've learned a lot about hosta from the comments..opinions on different varieties..pointing out a trait I didn't notice..I realized how much I've learned when I'm looking at a hosta website..I go back and forth and analyze differences!..and figure out which one I love more..

Mbug, I knew that picture was yours because of the fence, but always get confused about the names……under or over the pic????The name closest to the pic (above) is not the right one, it’s the one under……you think I could remember that……duh!!
