What went wrong here?

We picked an upgraded tile for our utility room and while we were expecting it look like pic A, it looks like pic B. What went wrong and how can we fix it?

Looks like A has virtually no space between tiles as design matches & no visible grout lines. B has wide space between tiles & either isn’t grouted yet or has dark grey grout. Looks like B tile laid out to fiit space with minimal cutting of edge tiles - if it’s grouted can you take out & regrout with color matched to tile to minimize appearance of lines?

If that is dark grout, you can always paint it lighter. I had a company do mine several years back and it turned out well

Thanks . Yes it is a dark grout. I had no idea about the width of the grout. Didn’t think about it at the design center but after it was laid out, it came out as a big disappointment

If this is a new tile & grout job, I think it might be easier than it sounds to have it regrouted with lighter color. I’d check that out first before painting it as that, to me, sounds much more tedious & risky - tinynpaint brush & all those lines. And then, how does the paint hold up? If regrouting means grinding most of existing grout out, I’d ask how careful person doing it is about not damaging or scratching tiles. Our shower walls were regrouted so I know it can be done & maybe easier in floor than wall. Lighter color grout would really change the look but it is ok as is - just not what you expected.

It is a new tile & grout. I’m pretty sure we picked a grout to match the grey in the tile but the builder goes by the designers notes and we had no way to validate that . We might have to fix this ourselves after the fact.

I Googled how to regrout floor tile & doesn’t sound too intimidating especially with larger tiles & smaller room. Seems like a doable DIY. Here’s one of the sites I scanned - lots of Youtube out there too

    How to regrout

what was your grout width? in A, looks like it was 1/32" or 1/16". in B, looks like it might be larger? 1/8" ? That combined w/the darker grout gives you the more divided look.

you should have used a very light gray grout.

they do have a prodcut (Grout renew is one) where you can paint the grout lines a diff color.

if the grout is still fresh, you can try to scrape out 2/3rds of it and then regrout w/a ligher color

I referred to the design selections and it’s marked 3/16. Looks like that’s the default and we didn’t know enough at that time to pick a narrower grout.

yes, that would be the issue. Do you happen to have the tile manufacturer specs? Normally they will list what the required grout width is on their product. perhaps if it says 1/16", but the installer went larger, you'll have a case to have them redo it?

Check w/the tile specs. should be listed on the box of the tile, or you can check online or where you bought it

They’ve put an extra box in the attic. I’ll check that in the evening.

No need to regrout yet. You have enough on your plate moving into a new construction house. Get some grout colorant (e.g. Grout Renew) and lighten it up DIY in an afternoon for $15.

    Great job!

Looks much better... in the showroom picture, most likely tiles with such a pattern come with their own spacing and should be installed side by side without using spacers, also they matched the color to the color of the pattern on the tile this way you have a seamless look.

Your installer looks like used spacers are why it came out that way, the last picture looks much better.
