Also check the lighting. LED task lighting is important. Ambient LED lighting is seperate. Task lighting of 450 lumens at the counter can come from under cabinet lights and/or recessed overhead cans positioned 6" in front of the upper cabinet faces or above thecounter edge and a few inches toward the back. Placement so you don't shadow what you're working on with your body. LED ulbs come in different whites from warm to cooler 2700K to 5000K.

Take a look at steel gray granite. It is very inexpensive and virtually indestructible.
