I didn't. I ended up going with a Victory hood and have been happy with it so far.

There is such a thing as black passivization for stainless steel (may depend on the alloy), but it might not be suitable due to susceptibility to fading in UV light, and not resisting acid fingerprints very well in my experience, and I would be surprised if it retained its look at weld lines. Maybe newer versions exist than I've observed in the past.

"Con-Tact" paper might be better; it could be changed with the seasons.
