cherry den needs to be updated

How do I update this small dated room. I
Like things light and bright but I do appreciate that this is beautiful paneling. I plan to replace the sofa with a white chaise sofa and introduce a fabric that is a creamy color with green as part of the pattern. I’ll replace the rug also.

These are my thoughts
Lacquer the flanking bookcases in a cream color
Or maybe add wallpaper behind the shelves
Or a contrasting color
What do you recommend for the fireplace?

Gee I love it as is! Green is very on trend now. maybe find a pretty removable wallpaper for the book case back. I envision a bird sceenscene with blues, yellows and greens for the bookcase backings.

That room is adorable! is there another place the TV could go? the large black rectangle so high up in the room makes it the focal point.

I like the room as is....you may want to consider changing your light bulbs to 400 LED in Daylight. You woulds be surprised what a difference this can make. Also consider adding additional lamps, floor lamps or sconces to the room.

    That is lovely wood :)

You can easily make backer boards for the shelves- just take whatever wallpaper you like and apply it to a thin board or heavy cardboard and pop them into place. Easy refresh and you don't have to muck up the wood. You could take it further and do a backer board for behind the TV as well, make most of that wall lighter. Use temporary mounting tabs to help save the wood, or use small and minimal nails.

Do you actually use all that seating? I think removing the woven chairs would be good if you can. They kind of blend too well with the wood and brick, and just ends up looking a bit like clutter in front of the fireplace.

Don't know what's on the wall to the right of the picture wall, but it looks like there might be space to hang that octogon mirror abve the couch? The picture glass is already reflecting light from the windows, so the mirror might better serve there than where it is currently.

Your sofa is nice, but I know sometimes folks want to update. Are you planning on a similar style of chase sofa as what you got but in a cream color? Then consider testing it out- get a couple ceam colored sheets and dress your current sofa with them. Decide if you really like the cream or not. You could also try something more in the yellow family depending on what you choose for your backer boards.

Painting or wallpapering back of bookcases will only break up the room and will not update. Instead, reconsider how shelves are accessorized, lighter and layered (look on line for help and it will take a few attempts). I’d also remove the two chairs. If tv could go elsewhere, art or a mirror would be nicer.

I think a white couch is a great choice, but before making other decisions, consider fabric/textures/color scheme and how rug, cushions and art will bring room together.

Consider velvet, paisley, light oriental rug and a great piece of artwork. If interested, new lamps would help as well. Room below is light, modern/traditional to enhance panelling. Think a big picture style for room and then start making choices.

Ots a very busy room to the eye. Think more minimal with few accents. Fireplace is the natural first attraction. Build out design from there.  You will do great things.

How many people are ever in this room at once? How many people regularly watch TV in here at once? Do you use the fireplace for fires? Depending on how you answer these questions I would:

    Remove the two straw chairs.

    Remove the black fireplace screen.

Place the two green chairs in front of the bookcases, facing the center of the room, and angle them in slightly. It will set up a nice conversation area with the sofa.

Replace the side tables with smaller tables that hold a lamp and a space for a cup of tea. Remove the pink-ish ottoman and replace it with the green one.

Edit the bookshelves and arrange them with more negative space.

Reconsider the rug. I'd go for something less graphic than stripes.

Pics of how to orient the chairs, perhaps a bit more space between them.
