Help decorate bedroom around geometric curtains

My husband *loves* these. They are really pretty with the light streaming through them -- although definitely not serene or spa-like! ha We've 'decorated' our previous bedroom around the bedspread (my pick) for the last 15 years, so it's his turn, now. ;) The king bed frame and dresser stay; everything else, including the horrible rug that I repurposed from another room when we moved, can go. I don't need hotel-esque, no-pics-on-dresser pristine, and I'm not going to attempt to 'match' the bathroom, which is super neutral and (dare I say) spa-like. However, I'm having a hard time figuring out what will look good with these very bold, geometric, shades-of-blue curtains -- I'm looking for bedspread, rug, big art for blank wall. The French doors open to a lovely Spanish-style interior courtyard. Thanks for any help!!!

Bossy curtains

Not sure why I ever thought an ombre brown rug was a good idea. :P There is nowhere else in the house where the dresser can live, and it's a high-quality piece, so it has to stay here.

Bedspread has done its duty and can retire proudly. Folding Costco chair, although classy :P , can retire as well. :D Big blank wall to fill.

@Carrie B They're a turquoise-y ombre blue. :) Thanks for the search tip -- just started googling geometric bedrooms. Definitely think something fun is called for here! @loobab great call on the lamps -- they are artifacts of our old bedroom, which was just big enough for the bed and nothing else. ;) I am happy to ditch the bedside tables, too -- although they ARE vintage 2010 Target... hahah

OK! Add some turquoise-y ombre blue - in a new rug, bedspread, art, etc... That, and some geometry!

The room would look better with larger nightstands (bachelor chests really) & larger lamps to read by.

You can use those graphic drapery panels, but then other items in the room are solid color or perhaps stripe to coordinate.

The first thing is to decide on a direction for the room and after searching for rooms that are appealing, it will be easier to choose decor.

Do you want to play down the drapery, heading towards an eclectic, traditional look.

Heading modern (would probably have to paint the highboy/change handles).

Thank you, everyone! Had not thought about changing the dresser handles -- great idea. Will start looking for bigger side tables/lamps, and was thinking something like this

for duvet cover. That is a fab rug, @cawaps -- definitely bold! ;)

Since you have a Spanish Courtyard, you might want to consider some multicolored Spanish tiles that you could frame and hang on the wall. Most of them have dark blue in the pattern.

Nancy ya have a decent light brown neutral, over amber floor.

This isn't bad with curtains either.

@everdebz My husband would prob go for that Serious Chic print, but that's too much for me! haha But something along those lines... I had originally wanted a nice abstract landscape, but that will not work with the drapes.

And I *love* that Japiko set -- but they don't have blue in king size!! sob

Mediterranean courtyard, fab, and with terra cotta roof!

Someone said that the pattern resembles accent tile. It's actually a good look, and it's not necessary to focus on geometric in a modern or other way. Maybe an item or two should repeat geometric outright.

The courtyard with the stucco walls and terracotta roof is my favorite part of this house, and I *love* waking up and looking out at it in the morning when the sun's coming up!

I just discovered that RugsUSA has an awesome view-in-your-room feature. I'll try it tomorrow after taking off the purple cover so I have a white duvet on the bed, but for anyone looking for an inexpensive rug, this visualization tool is SO useful!

Ivory Honeycomb rug -- it's got a great raised-textured pattern and I think it would be perfect... unless I get a white duvet cover. Nervous the ivory will look dirty against white...

The geometric curtains, the duvet idea you posted, and more than a few pics and suggestions that others posted made me think of regency style-

Those window panels are great! (Who sells those?). I love the dark blue board and batten wall behind bed suggestion, larger side tables (ie small dressers), bigger lamps, white bedding and duvet, two toss pillows with color (not 15!). Neutral rug. Then decide on art. Maybe Etsy or local Open Studios in your area for some original art.

These natural fabrics and buttons, etc. might look neutrally good with walls and white in curtains... ?

A chunkier wooden curtain rod in a dark color or white?

Home Depot? Ha. Wouldn’t have guessed them!!

I stole my son's bedspread to see what a blue duvet would look like; and then made a white-with-blue-border mock-up with a sheet and random things I found in my house. :D I used the RugsUSAL tool to put in a white rug. Which looks better?

Blue, right? With white sheets/pillows, and graphic throw pillows, bigger side tables with bigger lamps, and some sort of wall art? And paring down pics on dresser...

I'm not expert at all, but seems that look with thin border comes in pure white.... with ivory rug ?oh well... I picture stone-washed fabric and linen also.

I think you've got a lot of suggestions for a color palette, pattern and wall decor. Just keep in mind that all the inspiration photos feature a well-styled bed. This means not just throwing the duvet on the bed with a sad-looking droopy bedskirt and plain pillows. The best way to start is a well-constructed, well-fitting bedskirt. If you can afford it, have it custom made--it really anchors the whole look. Or you don't need a bedskirt at all if you have a footboard. Get a few decorative shams and pillow, and a good blanket.

Also important to an attractive bed is a duvet insert a few inches larger than the duvet. If it's too small it looks wrinkly and flat. Don't rely on manufacturers' labeling "queen/full/king." Measure everything before you buy because each manufacturer has sizes that can be slightly different. Then fold the duvet in thirds and place it at the foot of the bed.

I think those curtains demand a level of "crispness" in the decor. Certainly in the bedding as noted above. I wonder how linen bedding would look--not too "hotel-like" but maybe just dressy enough.

Can you buy more of those curtain panels to give more volume?

    last modified: 3 years ago

Navy or white really won’t have as much of an impact as compared to how you style and layer the bed. Seems like you may be focussed on how to make drapes work, but perhaps losing sight of how each choice will affect the overall feel of room, so consider the overall direction and it will be easier to make the right decisions.

Why not let him have free rein for the bedroom? See what he comes up with?

    last modified: 3 years ago

Which looks better? Blue, right? Nope, white. Look at Beth's and Maureen's photos again.

I like the idea of a rug that can stand up to the curtains, not something that looks like a large white bathmat. Maybe a rug with a similar tile geometric pattern - like the curtains - except in a small scale, Not this, but on this order... either blue and white or a raised pattern white on white, as in Beverly's last photo.

@barncatz That rug DOES look like a bathmat in those renderings.... haha! It actually is a white-on-white (ivory, really) raised pattern.

However, that white and blue one that you posted is really pretty...

@Emily R. oh dear, I stand corrected, ha ha. LOVE the rug - the raised pattern echoes the drapes. Really nice.

I have those curtains in my living room. The rest of the space is done in shades of taupe and off white with dark brown for contrast.

Man, not to warp this - the curtains are labelled "Mecca" which isn't the hotel type for bedding, and imo not with the dresser there added in.

Want 1 matching pillow? would be ok.

@everdebz Yes, this looks like the same curtain. Not sure what you mean about 'hotel type for bedding' and dresser.

This would create the calming space, but also lean into a Art Deco/vintage feel to complement the curtains….. purchase vintage poster like this one

    last modified: 3 years ago

Hotel bedding isn't the name for the often-embroidered trim bedding that you did well in a post was above. I think bohemian might be a term the curtains and courtyard imo, and not a tailored, dressy type.

Thanks for the fun design challenge!

I put together an idea board (see below) that draws on many of the good suggestions others have made. A deep grayed navy wall behind the bed would really hold its own against the curtains. I like the idea of using azulejo tiles as a frame around the bed window. They would honor your Spanish-influenced architecture, and many have geometric patterns that would echo the curtain design on a smaller, more intricate scale. Your classic chest of drawers is beautiful! I chose a bench in similar wood to the chest, with a back shape that relates to the curtain pattern. Other clean-lined pieces and strong, graphic art will keep the curtains from dominating so much. See what you think.

And here are a couple of edited photos incorporating some of the above ideas:

@simplynatural Thank you so much!!! Wow, that was very generous of you to put the board together. :) :) I ordered a white duvet set and will start with that. I also bought a nice big mostrara plant the other day -- I've been trying it out in different parts of the room, but had not put it next to the dresser -- will move it there and see how that works. I really like the mock-up of the three small prints to the right of the closet. Thank you!

Glad you liked it, Emily R. If you want specifics on idea board items:

    • Rug is Stylewell Ian Blue from Home Depot.
    • Bench is Alcott Hill Yorkshire upholstered bench from Wayfair (but currently out of stock).
    • Nightstand is Ethnicraft Spindle nightstand in black (several sources). A less expensive alternative could be Novogratz Her Majesty 2-drawer black nightstand from Home Depot.
    • Lamps are Helena Blackened Bronze table lamp from Overstock and Modern Wood Column table lamp from West Elm.
    • Art is all from greatbigcanvas.com: the green/blue/white abstract is Earthy Collision by Kari Taylor; the curving jetty is Infinite Curve by Doug Chinnery; the dock pilings is Decrescendo by Doug Chinnery (many of his pieces could be possibilities); the sea fans are Inverse Sea Fan I-IV by Grace Popp.

Have a great time creating your space!

@simplynatural can you share the app you used to create the edited photos?

@Rachel P, I just use Microsoft's freebie Paint. It's limited and takes some patience, but it helps me visualize and the price is right!

UPDATE: Thank you, everyone, for all your help!! I mostly went shopping in my house, and changed things up a bit:

    1. moved in blue-ish rug from desk area; got rid of ugly beige ombre rug

    2. moved in dining room chair I wasn't using anyway; it's not awesome but it's better than the folding chair ;) and my mom made the quilt when I was a teenager, so...

    3. moved in blue blanket from den

    4. framed/hung watercolors my MIL gave me for Christmas -- not exactly what had been envisioning, but I love them and they are free ;)

    5. new: big monstera plant from Trader Joe's of all places; it surprisingly seems pretty happy here

    6. new: blue and white duvet cover (Overstock); blue bedskirt (Macy's); blue geometric pillow (HomeGoods)

Eventually it would be nice to add an upholstered bench under the pics, and get bigger bedside tables + lamps -- but I don't want to spend the $$ on that right now. Overall, I'm happy with the room, and appreciated all the suggestions!
