Floating Shelf Sagging

Hi Houzzers! I’m struggling to fix a sag on a floating shelf in my entryway. I‘ve included a link to the shelf below as well as a couple pictures of the hardware and shelf.

The hanging hardware is level but once the shelf is placed on thr hanging hardware there seems to be some space between the hanging hardware and the inside of the shelf that’s creating the sag.

I’ve tried two fixes so far with no success:

1) Tried placing some adhesive on top of the rods (you can see it in the pictures below) to make for a tighter fit between thr hanging rods and the inside of the shelf

2) Tried using some shims between the wall the shelf but it created a noticeable gap between the shelf and the wall that i didn‘t like

Of course i could attach some brackets on the bottom of the shelf but that defeats the idea of having a floating shelf. Has anyone had experience with this shelf or even fixes for a sag on a similar floating shelf?

Put a level perpendicular to the wall on the supports These should be perfectly level.

This should work without shims.

Does it sag when the plant is not on it? Maybe the plant is too heavy and the support brackets are just not substantial enough. You could try a narrow console in that spot instead.

Unfortunately it’s the same with or without the plant 🙁

Assuming you found wall studs to screw this into, they may need to be tightened.

Yep two of the screws are into wall studs and the others we used drywall anchors and screws. I’m confident that it’s secure and that’s not the reason for the sag.

I’m thinking it has to do with the product design and the way the hanging hardware (rods) sit inside the shelf.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I can find someone that has worked with this specific product from Pottery Barn before.

Where did you insert the shims? Between the mounting bracket and shelf, or between the wall and the shelf? You could try inserting very slender shims between the wall and the bottom edge of the mounting plate, if you haven't already. I would think the shelf would hide any gap that creates. You might also try adhesive pads on the BOTTOM of the mounting rods.

I am only seeing two screws in the bracket. I would expect the bracket to have holes toward the top and toward the bottom of the piece. You need screws in both edges of the bracket so it can't rotate when the load is applied. While you could probably secure the bracket using only a few holes, you would have to pick the appropriate ones, balanced top and bottom and left and right of center
