but i dont understand the premise ... if you are growing it in the house.. its a houseplant ....

if its grown outside.. it could be a tree ..

the definitions are not mutually exclusive ...

if it hasnt already... its going to start shedding the lower leaves... no plant holds it leaves forever ... and its usually an annual event ... nbd ...

it might be lacking proper light .. as you move down the trunk.. and the leaves start to sag ... one way to get it more light .. is to grow it outside in summer.. in full bright shade .. so it can store energy in its roots.. to make it thru winter in the house .... presuming of course.. you have a yard to put it in ...

In the tropics where it is a landscape plant, it is considered a shrub.

At up to 20' tall in its native environment and with no lower branching, the dracaena is most definitely a tree! As are a great many other common houseplants we grow. The fact that they are unlikely to grow to similar tree-like proportions in a pot indoors does not make them any less a tree.

In the tropics that height and form is a shrub. You can prune it with a machete.

So the answer is that it's both, a tree that is a houseplant.

Yes, you can plant it outside in SE coastal Ga. zone 8b and it will be fine until you get a freeze like you will be having today. Then it will be dead.

I don't think of them as trees, even when they're grown outside. I have several different varieties, and I believe some are smaller than others. There are fragrant ones too.

They form clumps, and are easily rooted from the cut-off tops.

Agree about pruning. Every fall, I have to prune some of the tallest trunks on my potted trees so they will fit in the house and get enough light. If you want a clump, a more full pot, stick the removed tops back into the soil, all the way to the bottom of the pot. Healthy stumps will grow new branches, usually near the cut point, so keep that in mind when deciding where to cut.

A spot where a too-tall branch was snapped a few months ago so the pot could come inside. A new branch is forming.
