Brandon your Charles the Mills is beautiful. You said you had almost no disease issues with it in Georgia which intrigued me. How did it do specifically with blackspot? Was it clean no spray?

@dianela7analabama I had zero black spot on Charles de Mills. It was a no spray garden. At the end of the growing season I got a little bit of powdery mildew, but it wasn't a problem.

On a side note, I haven't had much problems with black spot on gallica roses. I think that I read that gallicas don't have that big black spot problems in general, but I can't remember where I read that. Maybe others can confirm or deny?

Brandon, I liked and subscribed. Keep the videos coming. Since I garden in Atlanta, GA, I am curious what other roses did really well for you here. I have a small Charles de Mill growing in one of my flower beds but based on your review, I might have to move her where she can sucker to her heart’s content.

@MasLovesRoses_z8a GA Thank you. I was in the spaghetti junction area of atlanta and lots of classes did well. it might be easier to say what didn’t do well.

I had a couple of moss roses that just did not like it there and wound up dwindling away. The centifolias were a mixed bag. I am now drawing a blank on the names of the ones I grew.

Bibi Maizoon and Scarbough Fair failed spectularly. The other English roses did well.

For my yard in Atlanta, I wou would definitely recommend Old Blush, Mutabilis and Smith’s Parish. they all did incredibly well and if they were hardy to St Louis I would grow them here. The Chestnut rose did well.

Are you able to go to the Oakland cemetery? When I was there there were a lot of roses and should help you see what mature roses look like in atlanta. at least the roses were there when i left in 2015

My Charles de Mills has been gone many years, I had forgotten him until now . It was one of three roses that became covered with scale from my neighbor planting flowers nearby.

I took a CDMills bouquet to the food bank and the receptionist asked what it was, she didn't recognize it was a rose, it is so extraordinary..

I'm curious about what happened with your Scarborough Fair. I almost got her this year but she ended up not making the shortlist. She seems really pretty and I'm still considering her for next year. What went wrong with her in your Georgia garden?

I love Charles de Mills! So far, mine hasn't suckered too much. But I haven't had him that long, and I remember the same things with La Belle Sultane. For the first few years, she seemed well behaved, and I thought "oh she just got a bad rap". Once she finally settled in she started suckering like mad. Now we have to mow her all the time. But I still love her, and even if Charles starts to behave as badly, I'll still love him. Some roses are just so beautiful I'll forgive many sins! And the fact that they don't get BS is pretty wonderful. Charles is right by my driveway (gravel - although at this point mostly grass) and if he wants to sucker into the driveway, that won't bother me a bit!

@seasiderooftop Scarborough Fair grew about 3 inches total in the 3 years I had it. I think that I got 2 flowers out of it the entire time as well. I wasn't sad when I had to leave it behind

Brandon, I’ll have to check the Oakland cemetery. I’ve never heard of it. Yet again, I haven’t been here long. I also had Scarborough Fair in my wish list. Good thing I didn’t put it in my DA order.

@MasLovesRoses_z8a GA what part of Atlanta are you in? The Oakland cemetery is on the north side of I20 just east of the intersection of I75. If you know where the zoo and Grant Park is, it is on the other side of I20. Just a recommendation, go early in the day, go with someone the first time. (Unless you are super comfortable walking around in cemeteries.) A couple of celebrities that are buried there that might be a draw is Margaret Mitchell of Gone with the wind, and a big time golf person Bobby something. Sorry not a golf person so I don't remember. There are a few other big names as well. Just a heads up on Margaret Mitchell, she shares a physical tombstone with her parents and she is on the out of the way side of it.

I’m in north Gwinnett (Suwanee) but will certainly research the cemetery to find out when the best time to visit is (to enjoy the roses)

@MasLovesRoses_z8a GA i am familiar with where suwanee is. I would recommend going to the cemetery in the spring april/may and also around columbus day in the fall. that way you catch the once bloomers, a and then can see the repeat bloomers shining
