Standards the world needs

Mine is sheet sizes. I think we need an easy-to-see indicator of sheet size. Maybe a standard color of thread for the hem. Purple for king, pink for queen, green for full, blue for xlong twin, yellow for twin. Or PRINT the size, tone on tone if you want to be subtle, around the perimeter. ANYTHING so that you don’t have to unfold the sheet. At the bare minimum, print it on the tag, but the tag often gets folded to the inside where you can’t see it. I mean, if they can size frozen pizza boxes to fit the side-by-side freezer, sheets should be easy.

(In case it isn’t obvious, I’m collecting up the bedlinens from around the house. How they get so scattered, I don’t know.)

What standards do you need to see?

Women's clothing sizes. (ETA: meaning that they should be standardized, when they're obviously not.)

IMPE, it usually is on the tag.

My daughter is doing her senior project on women's clothing sizing.

One charging cord that works for everything. And when I buy things do not put another charging cord in the box. I just cleaned out our box of 'wires' and I counted 50 USB to USB-C cords to get rid of. I think my sons' friends must leave these things here, or else they breed.

I'd like for ALL ovens to have convection. How hard is it to put a fan in an oven! :0) I'd like for ALL dishwashers to have hidden controls.....so small children & pets don't accidentally turn them on OR....a lock-out feature. I think ALL major appliances should have a minimum FIVE year warranty or your money back. JMO

I would like to be able to take a pill (or maybe it comes in the form of a polish?) that sets your fingernails at a specific length and shape. Just stops the growth at whatever length you like.

Planned obsolescence should be a criminal offense. It's fraud. Bad for the environment too.

Sueb - I need the reverse of that pill. I wish I could get mine to grow longer.

I have taken to marking the top left corner of my son's sheets with sharpie since the Q sheets are almost square and with the super elastic gathering it all together it is impossible to tell until you are putting it on the bed if you have it on correctly.

And I need SueB's pill to work on hair so that when it gets to that perfect length (about 2 weeks post cut) I can stop it until I want it to grow.

I was just having the planned obsolescence conversation with my son the other day and even at 31 he's fed up with the disposable nature of virtually everything. Not disposable or obsolete because they are not costly but because they are so poorly made - phones, appliances, clothing.... It led us into a discussion about clothes 'in the old days' and he has no clue what well finished clothing with quality tailoring even means. sorry bpath - back on the rails...

Absolutely standardized charging cords - nothing should be that complicated.

I’m with you bpath. Yes, usually its on a tag, but where is the tag when you have a bunch of folded sheets sets together at the lake and dont remember which set is which?

And yes to standard ladies wear sizes.

I’d like to see food packaging kept to a certain sizing for most things , such as a pound or 16 ounces for example. Food companies have led us down the path of pricing for so long, downsizing the quantities to justify a price increase. As a result, we have to adjust recipes often to accommodate these changes, or at least be aware of the difference. I’d rather just pay the price and be done with it.

ITA about cords, they at least should be the same within the same brand. So ridiculous.

Sue, I've always wanted that for hair growth. Stop it growing when it's at that perfect length, and bank it for a future time.

I think we need standardized vacuum cleaner hose and attachment sizes. :)

Here's one that just burns my hide. Every single vehicle no matter the price should have an easy to use/adjust standard dashboard indicator lights so you don't have to guess what button to push on the steering wheel!

Random dashboard below. See the middle box? When I bought my car that box showed how fast I was going in big numbers. LOVED IT!! If I'm wearing sunglasses it's hard to see the number on the speedometer.

EVERYTIME I get an oil change the bozos reset the indicator box! I dare you to reset it back to how fast you're driving without looking in the book and still not finding it. They did it again this week.

Also, there should be a standard way to turn the heat, air, defrost, etc. on without having to put your dam glasses on!

I think there should be one standard for shoe sizes, like they have in Europe (I think) with one standard for women, children, and men. This would make it easier for women to buy men's shoes and vice versa. I buy all of my hiking shoes in the women's department.

Lars, I buy all my graphic tees to wear around the house in the men's department. lol. They're always a better quality tee with sleeves that are a tad longer. Why don't they do the same for women??

    Oh, interchangeable dishwasher racks!

Men’s shirts, jackets, and pants show their dimensions (waist, lengths, etc). Why not women’s and kids’?

@jmck_nc, I put a Sharpie dot in the middle of the bottom hem of the top sheet and in the bottom hem the bottom sheet. Then I know which way the bottom sheet runs, plus I know where the middle of the top sheet is so I can make up the bed faster. I have to have my top sheet on the bed squarely.

bpath, I agree there ought to be some readily visible indicator of sheet size. That would be so nice!

Have any of you shopped for bridal gowns. Talk about whacky sizing! When DD married, she wore a size 6 in an ordinary street dress. In a bridal gown, she wore anywhere from a 12 to a 16. Talk about something that will stress out a bride!!

I agree with labeling sheets. I volunteer in a thrift store, where I am the self-appointed Linen Queen (because no one else would do it.) I'd guess at least 50% of our donated sheets either have no size on the tag, or the tag has faded so that the writing is gone. I have almost memorized the table of linen dimensions, which of course is also non-standard, but it gets me close.

You know what confuses me about that? Low/mid rise jeans. It seems the number indicates the nonexistent waist if it actually did go up that high. There needs to be a "band" measurement, and have the tag indicate if that means waist, hip or in between.

(Yes, I still wear low/mid rise. You will not catch me dead in mom jeans, SO unflattering.)

UGH I hate low rise jeans...so freakin' uncomfortable. Always feel like I need to pull my pants up! Thank goodness they have started makes higher waist jeans and NO they aren't the "mom jeans". Ya know, all the kiddos used to wear the high waist jeans and they were never considered unflattering or "mom" jeans. Why are they now called mom jeans just because the kiddos started wearing those unflattering down to their naughty bits, jeans?

Definitely hot dogs vs. buns - and lasagna noodles are another - they never match up with recipes!

Re: Oakley's comment above - in defense of the bozos, it may be the reset is due to some automatic default they can't control 🙃

I would like for no company to ever again use adhesive price tags. There needs to be an easy-to-peel tag or other invention that doesn't require my finger nails to pick off. Last year, I purchased a new fleet of Crate and Barrel dishes and EACH and EVERY piece had a stubborn sticker on the bottom. I spent too many hours of my life scratching most of them. But still today, when I load/unload the dishwasher, I have painful reminders of those fragments I couldn't remove.

I know there are products that can remove them, but I feel like I shouldn't need a third-party product to remove a price tag.

@Feathers11, next time you need to remove a price sticker, heat it up a little bit with your hair dryer. It will peel right off. I was so happy to learn that little trick. 😉

The hair dryer trick is fantastic for removing any labels! I reuse nearly all my cardboard boxes for my business, and removing the old label so I can apply a new shipping label is a must. So easy with the hair dryer, they just peel right off!

I use the hair dryer all the time to remove any label. It works!

King mattress is 76x80 Just make it 76x76 or 80x80 so I don't struggle with the sheet again and I can truly rotate all sides. Oh and please make double sided mattresses again. The no flip has never worked for me.

My MIL taught me the hairdryer trick and it's a game changer! Such a simple little hack but boy does it eliminate a hugely annoying and ubiquitous problem.

I don't know if this is universal but my sheets tend to have the label sewn into a corner that is on one of the 'short' ends ie runs the width of the mattress. So I always start putting the sheet on from that corner.

    Same here, running.

And I do agree about flipping mattresses, but I think one-sided works out for mattress co.s, since you wind up replacing a mattress sooner, so no incentive to change that...

I've never heard of the hairdryer trick for removing labels! I thank you. And my nails thank you.
