Is there travertine under the carpet? Can you dispose of it entirely and have more flexibility on size?

Not a pro - but to be honest I'm not sure the whites will work well with the tone of the travertine. Plus it's going to be hard to keep a primarily white shag rug white if you have kids or pets. I don't understand the choice of the black and white rug with the navy components. If that's just a link for another color and you can buy it in navy, that would be my preference.

No for blue and light rugs. Too dark and much blues in room already. Light rugs are too light to keep them clean.

So no to white and no to black&white. Hmmm. I tried a natural fiber rug but it was too brown and looked terrible. The travertine is not under the fitted carpet unfortunately otherwise I’d have ripped the carpet up long ago. There is quite a lot of white in the travertine itself but it’s not visible in the picture. I’m trying to avoid a cream rug which would just blend right into the cream travertine but it looks like that might be the only option left.

Or maybe get rid of the blue. The curtains are actually grey, I could do a grey theme instead. Then perhaps the black& white rug would work.

I think the problem with the white rug idea is that the stone and the sofa are warm cream colors and the white will not complement them as well as some other colors. That grasscloth is gorgeous and I wouldn't let anyone discourage you from using it. I think the blue rug you pictured might work but it's very similar to what you have and is a very strong pattern that will be kind of bossy with the rest of your choices. Would you consider a rug with blue in a softer pattern? Maybe something like this to go with the grasscloth? It's difficult to find one that would go with the grasscloth that doesn't clash with the fireplace wall and art as they are now, but you get the idea. Maybe someone with photoshop skills can put your grasscloth on the wall with your rug choices. I don't think any of these are "the one" but just to give you some visuals. I also put in a white one to show you how that would look (not good).

Just a thought - I wonder if you might find a fun combination of FLOR tiles that would fit into the carpet footprint, assuming the travertine edges are finished? Certainly a different look and feel, but since your original picks were geometric, you might find something that appeals to you. I do wonder about the level changes on your floor if you put a larger rug over the existing carpet and travertine. If you rip up the carpet, I imagine you would need to add a pad to avoid having an indentation?

Just my opinion. I would stay away from busy or patterned rugs. You don't want your rug to be loud and attract attention since you hate the carpet surrounding it. I agree that shag rugs are a no no. It is hard to keep clean. I found a lot of nice neutral gray and beige rugs. Here are some examples. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. I’ve definitely decided that I’ll be painting the walls in Aesthetic White (I know already this goes well with the tile as it’s in the kitchen). I’m undecided about the chimney breast wall, I still really like the teal grass cloth but I may just sit with it at aesthetic white for a bit. I’m going to investigate getting the inlaid carpet replaced - see what’s available in a light cream/beige whilst also looking at some of the rug suggestions above. Love the tip of ordering a a small rug to see how it looks 😍 found this color guide for travertine which is helping also. It seems I’m doing a bit of the navy and a bit of the grey right now. Time to choose one and run with it.
