Had the trunk been injured recently? Maybe a hard freeze? Palm trees have no cambium and are unable to heal wounds. Some Phoenix palms survive hard freezes but usually fronds are killed first. Are you in Texas? Last year's unusual cold blast killed or injured many trees in Texas.
