First off, clean it in the sink like it's one of your dishes. If the rust is still really bad after that, you can use a plastic tub and something like Evaporust. Or if you could wire wheel it off if you're the tool-using type.

Then, give it a good rubdown with an oil or lubricant (historically, they would use linseed oil).
