I find art online a few ways:

Etsy — search by artist, subject, size, colors, styles, materials, anything you like.

Ebay — same search methods, but I look exclusively for vintage art there. My most recent purchase was a very rare Michel Granger poster from 1975, I’d been hunting for years. Very exciting. :)

I’ve found several of my favorite pieces by plugging search terms I want (Google or whatever you use) and finding the artists’ own sites … purchasing directly from them.

I found an old book page I framed (circa late 1800’s) of a horse illustration from a New York company that deals only in that sort of thing.

The choices are truly limitless, online or not.

You don't have to do all your searching online.

Art fairs in community, colleges, even high schools.

You can thrift frames (Goodwill, garage sales etc) and replace the print with something you like. Or visa versa, if you find art you like with a poor frame.

Found objects - not all wall art is on paper. You can mount and hang fabrics like silk scarves. Grills, gates other architectural items, sports equipment and so on...

love local junk shops and Etsy - i have ordered several paper tapestries from Anthropologie and they are a little different and a great value

Thank you for the great ideas. @la_la Girl I have that exact tapestry saved for the future when I have a good room for it - looks great in your photo!

@P Banos I wish I could hang my bike as the wall art, so love your creative ideas, but in this case the art is for above the couch to complement gray/beige/black/blue tones. Will keep in mind for the future!

@Jilly Congratulations on your finds, so satisfying to track down wishlist items and I love the vintage vibe!

I have ordered from Saatchi Art online. I tend to filter by price, size, and orientation. Then to keep the number of results from getting out of hand I will filter by category--painting, photography, new media, collage, printmaking, etc. Some categories tend to be less expensive than others, which is why I'm often looking at new media, collage, and printmaking, which tend to have a larger selection of lower cost pieces. When shopping for myself I don't tend to filter by subject or color.

So helpful, @cawaps, thank you. I am converging on finding a painting with some red to serve as a good accent to the gray, black, white, and blue living room furniture and carpet so far. This is a big help to target the types of pieces that may be a good fit. I appreciate it!

How about bicycle wall art like these:

@Aphaea those are such thoughtful ideas and beautiful pieces, thank you! I had half joked to hang my bike because it is hard to find a good spot for it, but your links are inspiring to explore, thank you!

GreatBigCanvas.com and if you register your email address you're likely to get 50% off on your first order.

A canvas guarantees that there is no glare coming from the glass like on framed prints.

la la Girl, those are great! I snapped a couple of quick pics of mine, it’s in the guest room. The watercolor bird underneath I ordered on the artist’s site directly. And the cloth was found in Jamaica, I tacked it up in a shadow box.

(Pics tilted because the footboard is in the way.)

Great to see the repurposed book pages and great art finds @la_la Girl & @Jilly! @BeverlyFLADeziner - that is a great resource to know about, thanks!

Jo, I hope you show us whatever you decide on! Can’t wait to see. As you can tell, we’re passionate about art. :D

ETA:

Bicycles were mentioned … this is great. I saw it on a site I ordered a poster from (for my DD) …

I second Great Big Canvas. They frequently have 50% off. Recently I’ve been looking at reproductions of wood engravings from the 1800’s printed on canvas. I grew up in Brooklyn and I particularly like these NYC scenes:

Please do not buy art because it has the colors that match your furniture. Buy art because you love it. I have purchased art work at art fairs, in art schools; artist's workrooms, at museums, at various shops as I traveled,& thrift shops and from artist's as they show their stuff in squares, on bridges, near great cathedrals, etc. Most framing shops will offer non-glare glass for your art.

That's such a wonderful sentiment, @threers, thanks. I want to find a piece I love - it will be the centerpiece of the visual panorama in the space. These ideas are just fantastic.

@Carolae I love NYC scapes from inside or out that bring back childhood, thanks for sharing!

@Jilly - those are so fun, thanks for sharing the pieces!

Contemporary Metal Wall Art

@Jilly - love those pieces! Especially the one with horses - that is fabulous (love finds like that!)
