Too much yellow!

We painted our walls yellow (The color is Sherwin-Williams Solé). I was not expecting it to be so strong and overwhelming. Now we are thinking of painting the other walls to tone it down and leave the wall with the TV as is (make it an accent wall?). Need help with paint colors that would help neutralize the yellow. Thanks.

We cannot get on a ladder to reach the top vaulted corner.

If you like it, I would keep it. I love it. One option for the other walls is Pineapple cream SW 1668. https://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW1668-pineapple-cream

Keep it unless you hate it in 30 days. You just have colour shock. Let it sink in and live with it for a bit.

i have to ask. did you not paint a sample on any of the walls prior to committing??

the color isn't that bad, I think it's your decor elements that making it look worse than it is.

You don't have one other yellow thing in that room! you have browns/golds/beige and blacks.

start w/any area rug w/yellows and coordinating tones.

I'd probably get rid of the dark metal objects on the wall, the knick knacks, the frame, and prob the chairs. (and what ever that modular thing is on the left. that really doesn't work)

If you could do some white builtins on either side, conceal your speaker/media items and cords, it would help.

white built-ins. and look at the art! it's yellow. you need yellow items

. you need something like this or up to the ceiling, on either side. hide your media stuff in there.

    let me show you

both of the rooms have similar yellow walls. the lighter furniture, whites, coordinating colors really work w/the colors. especially this 2nd picture. bring in more white, textured rugs, white bookcase, lamps, tables.

yellow and gray is always a good combo

this one is similar to yours w/the brown items. to me it a little mid century looking.

If you like the brown, then try something like this:

if you like color, then do color

Can you post more pictures of the rest of the room? Maybe it’s just a matter of making some other simple changes to tie it altogether.

Also… I tend to agree that from what we can see of other items, that you need to do some editing. The brown chairs aren’t working well and the black mirror things should go

Unless you're up for replacing all or most of your furniture it would be cheaper to hire someone to repaint the room. You should be sampling before you paint a whole room. I'm guessing you didn't and that's what went wrong here. Most colors look more intense on a wall than on the paint chips. My previous house's family room was painted BM Standish White which was a lovely light butter yellow. I suggest Crescent Moon SW 7124 if you want to stay with SW, but you do have to sample in order to see if that is going to be the right color for you in that room. A paler yellow will look fine with your furniture.

Personally we love the yellow! We agree with the above of waiting a while before repainting just to make sure that you truly don't like it.

I've been thinking about this more and though the color looks good by itself on the paint chip or on one wall, it's the high LRV (74) that's causing more light to bounce off (on corners and opposite walls) that creates a more intense/ overwhelming overall vibe. Lesson learned: always consider the LRV when choosing a potentially polarizing colors.

Listen to Beth. She's always spot on. And please, DO NOT do a yellow accent wall.

Beth posted some really gorgeous examples, however, your space is quite different. I just think that between your specific decor and the beige carpet, this space simply cannot "pull off" this shade of yellow. it was a mistake. I think you would be so much happier if you repainted the whole room. choose a neutral color like soft white or pale beige. if you want to add some bold colors, do that with new art, drapes, pillows, etc.

if hiring somebody to redo this is simply outside of your budget, can you do most of the work and get help just with the highest point you can't reach? a family member or friend?

Once that's done, I think the fireplace could use a small change, it's too one-note. Painting the hearth matte black would be a quick and easy improvement.

@User What color did you use in the rendering?

This can be moderated.....take everything off the walls except the TV, then place your sofa and chairs, retake the pictures so we can see what you have furniture wise, and Houzzers will make suggestions to include low contrast accessories to fill the room. It can work!

Agree that the color as is has potential - so many gorgeous inspirations photos shared.

With regard to LRV, that's not the number that's going to help when it comes to anticipating how intense a color of yellow will look.

Because the only thing LRV tells you is how much light a color reflects - that's all it does.

An LRV of 74 isn't high, it's kind of middle of the road(ish) in terms of the average LRV for paint colors.

For example, all these colors have a LRV of 74.

It's Chroma that tells us how colorful, intense, vivid, bold a color looks. The higher the Chroma number, the bolder and more saturated the color is.

Please listen to Lori--she's spot on that it isn't LRV that is making the color so intense, but Chroma. LRV is so overrated and overevaluated when selecting color. Sole is a very intense, saturated color, as you can see from the numbers. So either work with it or change it.

I do not feel a yellow accent wall will look good with the furniture you now have. If you love yellow, I feel a toned down yellow or cream would be better.

Majority of wall space is a bit saturated? [and not extremely so]. Your chair is softly muted, and in a 'warm', so I think it's all worth it. :)

Just paint it over with a browner, drabber version of yellow or soft gold The yellow already up will serve nicely as primer - easy to cover if the new color is similar. No need to go off in some radical different direction. But do get samples and test first!

Yellow and this color, and add leaves of green, seems a standard combo, in "times of old" maybe - is it modernized if blocks of color instead of patterned.... ?

Pratik Bhavsar What color did you use in the rendering?

I used photoshop, so no specific color. there are so many factors that can change how color in a room looks and feels, so I can't name colors for you specifically. For example, avoid beige if your room doesn't get good natural light, it will be too drab. I think your carpet color is going to need to be carefully considered. Match the undertone, but go a shade or two lighter. I suggest bringing home a bunch of samples of off-white, place them on the carpet, and see how they look at different times of the day.

Update: We repainted. This was the easiest and cheapest option. Will continue to look for wall art to replace the mirror things. Thank you @Lori A. Sawaya for educating me on chroma vs LRV.

Yellow accent wall creates imo too much contrast with white mantel, black tv, etc.... and more pronounced with different side walls. I'd paint that wall the same.
