Outdated guest bathroom

Any ideas on how to paint/redecorate this guest bathroom? Most of my home has transitional decor with a lot of earthy tones.

For me, the wood trim with the gray walls and black floor is the odd out.

    I would consider wall paper.

On a relatively limited budget I would do cosmetic changes - paint; change the mirror and sconces, the rug and change the artwork.

If you have a higher budget changing the floor would do a lot.

In my opinion powder rooms are a place that can pop and be fanciful so you can paint in a striking color or wallpaper something interesting.

I agree: I don't like the black floor. It's not friends with the wooden door and the wood trim, and it's too modern for the pedestal sink. I would like to see something in a hex tile ... but not the typical B&W ... earth tone would look great /give you a bit of texture while staying in the tones you prefer. These would make a nice, neutral base and could withstand color changes you might want to make in the future.

I like the blue. It's nicely neutral, yet adds a bit of color. If you need to repaint, a shade deeper might be better. I wouldn't say no to teal. You have a lot of empty wall space ... lots of half baths look great with a different color above a wainscotting ... but don't do this AND a small hex tile ... it would be "too much".

The toilet and pedestal sink give you bit of a vintage vibe ... I'd be inclined to keep them, but I don't like the mirror. Why not? Is it that the frame is too rustic /too modern (?) for the sink? The mirror needs to be simple and taller-rather-than-wider. With a simple frame ... I'd go with silver to match your light fixtures. I also like the look of a small glass shelf above the pedestal sink.

I'd keep the light fixture above the sink, but the one on the ceiling screams 14.99 at Lowes. I'd like to see something simple in a silver tone (to tie into the other light fixture). Something not-too-big, but something that "dangles" a bit. Not a full-on chandy, but something with some downward dimension.

The floral picture does nothing for the room, and I'm iffy on the three small mirrors above the toilet.

I suggest that you look for wall paper that contains black, brown, and white. I found many on Etsy, but don't know your taste. One cute one was barn owls, but that might be too much for you.

Floor looks navy to me. I would paint walls palest yellow, find a new light fixtures, mirror and art. Love the floor/sink and toilet.

If budget is low, as @Yvonne Martin mentioned - wallpaper quick & easy way to pull floor, trim, & door colors together.

An inexpensive update for me would be: Paint walls a pretty sage green. New oval mirror, ceiling light, wall light and bright nature print. Pretty towels and possibly a round or oval rug to break up squareness. I love Beth’s idea of the grout colorant idea

I find outdated to be an overused description. Certainly the bath could use some livening up, but I wouldn’t consider it outdated. Outdated is an avocado tub and avocado tile with a 3 handled faucet. Or powder blue toilet and tub. Vanity with the plywood doors with surface mount hinges. Yours is modern enough that you can still buy those Kohler Memoirs toilet and sink at Home Depot.

I like your grey walls with the floor tile. Perhaps, just change rug, art, & mirrors over toilet?

maine, outdated is whatever someone thinks is outdated. you say avocado is outdated when many mid century designer or restorers would consider it quite in style. ditto powder blue. (and you can still buy colored toilets and tub)

Kohler memoirs has been around for 20+ years. I used to like it. now I think it's outdated. As is her bathroom. those common wood baseboards, all the rage w/builder in the 80's and 90's, is outdated. That style of pedestal, may not be outdated, if you have an ornate victorian style house.

It might be an overused description, but what else are you going to use for something that's had it's day? The items in her bathroom have come and gone. Or, no longer used by designers. Or, no longer in style.

Doesn't matter what description you use, the items no longer look good. If they did, and OP liked them, she wouldn't be her asking for help.

I would do wallpaper to tie together the black floor, white fixtures, goldish trim -

For an earthy, organic look, you might consider grasscloth on the walls.

You don't really need a rug at the sink.

Replace the plumbing fixtures first. Maybe get a console sink. Waterworks has quite a few.

When you say "paint and redecorate" does that really mean you want to sledgehammer the floor and get new plumbing fixtures, or were you really thinking "paint" and "redecorate", not gut remodel?

I would not use wallpaper especially for guest bathroom ( and when men use it) next to toilet and sink. And for grass cloth (it is not cheap) as well.

You wouldn’t use wallpaper in a bathroom? And because men may use it?

    Why?

So far no budget has been specified. Actually nothing has been specified — we’re all just playing a game of Design Darts. ;)

The color of the year is green and your art work has several colors of green that you may want to consider. A new rug to go with the green would be good.

apparently claudia doesn't seem that interested since she's never bothered to check back or comment on all the help she's received.

Wow, thank you all for your suggestions! I didn't expect such a huge response, I really appreciate it! Sorry if I offended anyone by not responding last night, I am a mom of 5 and we are in the middle of settling in here, the bathroom was left like this by previous owners and definitely not my style. I am definitely going to change out the light fixtures, hardware, artwork and paint walls. Not sure about wall paper, that scares me a bit to be honest.

A lot of folks mentioned painting the trim white, is that recommended when the whole house has the wood trim and the doors are what they are?

thanks for getting back claudia. sometimes posters disappear! you obviously have your hands full.

it's perfectly fine to paint the trim in a bathroom since it's enclosed.

Pick a style that you like first, and then determine if it should be painted.
