How to update dark paneled office with extra deep shelves

1. Keep walls and built-ins as is.
2. Keep the walls as-is but Paint the built-ins.
3. Keep the cabinetry as-is but Paint the walls.
4. Paint everything.
5. Cut panels and cabinets down to 36" base height with drywall above and re-do upper bookshelves.
6. Take it all down and start over.
7. Strip, sand, and white-wash the panels, paint the cabinets. It'll be worth the effort.
