The main barrier to growing fruit in your climate is the late spring frosts. We have the same issue here in Santa Fe, though to a lesser extent. I cringe every April or May when you guys have a sudden deep freeze after days of 80 degree weather! That said, if you are interested in growing the typical crops of apples, pears, cherries, and plums, which tend to flower a bit later than things like peaches, apricots, and almonds, your county extension office should be helpful in selection of varieties.

Personally, if I were growing fruit there, I would not bother with pomes or stone fruit, since they are so commonplace, and will still only bear every few years. I would focus on things like mulberries, jujubes, and American persimmons, which flower much later in the spring, and that are not as available in the stores. I remember a grower posting here in the past who was also growing pawpaws in Colorado Springs.
