New stainless cook top feels like sandpaper

I had a new stainless cook top installed. I tried to wipe it down with a damp microfiber cloth after instinstallation and it feels like I am wiping sandpaper. any one else? suggestions? A white powder comes up and keeps soreading but doesnt come off. kitchenaid just said to try Afresh.
