Installing a Thermostat for electric baseboard heat

We have a cottage where I work on the property which has electric baseboard heat. I wanted to upgrade the thermostat to a smart one. The current wiring to the existing themrostat has me puzzled. There are 2 wire coming into the box both from the top. Each has a black & white wire. The wire on the left has the white going to one of the Load terminals on the existing Tstat. The wire on the righ has its black wire going to the the other Load terminal on the Tstat. The left black wire goes to Line and the right white wire goes to the other Line. My new MYSA Tstat has an L1, L2 and Load terminal. I got the MYSA to power up but the heat just keeps rising. It's not switching off. Any ideas?
