If it was working correctly, and now it won't shut off, does your light happen to have a motion sensor? What do you mean "if i remove the switch all together," you took out the switch and wired the hots together? Of course it wouldn't turn off then.

No motion detector, taking the switch out meant I disconnected the wires from the switch and too it out, didn't wire anything together. There is no power to the switch wires.

If you took the switch out and the light is still on means you hooked the switch up to the wrong hot supplying the light. There may also have been a 3-way involved that now has suspect wiring.

The switch has been working and suddenly you find the light stays on when the switch is off, the switch is malfunctioning. The problem is probably that the toggle has disconnected from the circuit terminals.
