Queen bunk beds? That would feel really claustrophobic being on that lower bed! I hope you have really high ceilings to give the lower beds enough headroom.

I suspect that it wouldn't be queen on top although OP didn't specify that. There is a reason that you never see Queen on top - the idea is approaching ridiculous. Makes bed making even more of an issue.

Now full on top of Queen might be ok. But really are you looking to have a couple up there? And if someone is on the upper bunk, they are young enough that a twin is fine.

I think the nice compromise is Full down, twin up. You can sneak a young couple down low or an older person. But everyone's reality is different.

Are you building this house to be used as a short term rental or vacation home where providing sleeping accommodations for the most bodies possible is the goal? The bunks are a royal pain when it comes to putting sheets on a bed. i would think that built in where there is no access on three sides would be even worse. IMO, a queen size built in bunk bed would be a non-starter because the person on the wall side would have to litterally climb over the other person in the bed every time they had to get up in the middle of the night

Thanks everyone. We have very high ceilings so not as concerned with lack of space. This is for a vacation home where maximizing number of beds is our primary goal.

Ask the skilled carpenter you wish to build these bunks.

If the carpenter is skilled and in high demand, it could take several months just to get on his production schedule, then add in waiting for raw materials and then the actual labor time.
