How about 3 hanging plants, then plant large shrubs in the ground just on the outside of the concrete? Or put tall planters for more immediate coverage. I prefer planting in the ground with perennials so you’re not replacing annuals frequently and expensively.

I'd put a trellis at the edge of the porch and put climbers in. You'll have trouble with a tree in your drainage swale. How much water does it get in peak rain?

These are great ideas.. hanging baskets and shrubs is an interesting one. I’ve thought about adding a trellis..I have a coral honeysuckle plant that could climb it. For Big Doug’s design, not sure if the second pic was supposed to have something but what species would you suggest for the tree(s) that would still allow water to move freely in the bottom of the ditch?

It’s not a river but the water from the gutters and back side of the roof drain through that to the street. I’d have to look during a rain to see exactly how much.
