Refinish the cabinets to a color that will work with your new design idea, instead of trying to match everything to it. Start with a blank canvas.

It's a very dark wall color. Last thing you need a dark charcoal tile color too.

I don't understand why you would want to tear out perfectly good slate tile (if you like the darker colors) and replace it with something just as dark!

something better would be a 24x24 porcelain in a warmer griege color.

You don't want to think about lightening up that space by repainting those walls? (You say you want a diff wall color, but your other comment says repainted is not an option??)

I had an almost identical kitchen. Like yours, I didn't get a ton of light (that window is a covered front entry)

So, I refaced my cabinets, painted, new countertops, window, appliances, tile splash, pendants, vent hood,

and I did french oak engineered floors throughout the home.

It makes quite a diff in overall lighting, doesn't it? that kitchen was so dark.

YOu need to make sure your kitchen bulbs are in the 4000K region. if they're belowe 3500K, things are going to look yellow.

It seems like you're tyring to rush threw this? Flooring is a very important decor option in a house because of the expense, you're stuck with it for a long time!!

Make sure all of your other design elements work w/this flooring. What about the rest of the house?

Sorry, but that dark wall color, limited lighting, the darker furniture and these charcoal tiles, it's going to be a huge light suck!

Right now the slate works w/every single element you have. (You need a larger chandelier here) It works w/your color, the furniture. what you could do is bring in some wood flooring.

If you want to take it all up, then replace it with a lighter oak flooring

Hi Beth, I'm tearing out the tiles because the carpet is in such bad shape that it's a perfect opportunity to have one flooring across the entire first floor. The walls ARE too dark and need to go... Many sample pots later, still no clue on the color to go with.

Warmer Griege color looks good! I may consider that or (G&S's recommendation to redo the cabinets).

Oh! Repaint is DEFINITELY a must!

What I'd love to keep is the cabinets and countertops...

What I'd love to have is a uniform flooring (preferably darker shade that doesn't compete with the granite countertop.) I chose the gray slate because it's

1. Large format 2x4 feet..

2. The backsplash is staying and has the gray

3. I love this color theme: (I can't seem to catch on to the light /bright whites and grays :-( )

but not sure how to translate this to my kitchen :-) (i figured the wood is my cabinet), the gray, my floor.. wall paint ???)

Your kitchen remodel looks beautiful!!!! IOverall great advice.. yes! The lighting needs to be bigger in the foyer! Regarding a wood flooring like your suggestion, would it look right with the maple cabinets? If i go that way, i can use the dark slate (massive tiles) on the fireplace :-)

Ditto that backsplash. Right now the large slate tile backsplash ties in w/the tile floor.

Youre taking out the slate tiles because the carpet is going and you want uniform flooring. I get that. But changing one item usually snowballs because it affects how the other items look.

dark wood cabinets, dark countertop, dark backsplash and a darker tile floor is just too much dark!

I wish you would consider,

A. getting some hardware for your cabinets.

B. replacing the oversized pendant light over your island

C. new counters/splash

You don't have a lot of splash to redo. demo it yourselves and get some lighter, smaller tile. It shouldn't cost you much. (around the sink I'd just have the new countertop brought up as your splash)

at the very least, redo the splash. heres a honed black countertop w/white tile, soft sage walls (hardware placement is funky, but at least they have some)

You could even consider painting just the island and adding a light quartz top

see how much nicer this looks? You could do your charcoal tile floors w/this and they would look very nice.

but just imagine if this had the dark counters, dark walls, slate splash and no glass or hardware. it would be a cave!

think about doing some glass in a few of the uppers

This is an inexpensive granite countertop and simple white tile splash. would look nice w/the charcoal floors

this TajMajal quartzite and this zellige tile would be very pretty w/your cabinets. again, glass in a few of the uppers

another idea....did you know that you can hone or leather your current countertops? Now that would look cool with a new tile splash and your new floors

The slate floor and your cabinets are one of the best features in the house. You just need much lighter walls. And you can't try the color on the walls that are gold because you're going to get soo much reflection. I would also change out the pendant lighting to something in black metal.

This is going to be a drastic change and it will take some time to get used to so little color and your accessories will likely have to be finessed.
