I bought a couple air purifiers when we were having some construction done, and they really did improve the smell of our house (I didn't think it smelled bad before, but it made the house smell fresher, especially after cooking). It might be worth a try. Something like these. I would also prime and paint all the walls, rip out any carpet, and look for any places where water is getting in.

In my experience, basements that are ever so slightly damp are a source of this kind of smell. Maybe not damp all the time, but some of the time. I'd be looking hard at the basement, particularly after a heavy rain.

Hire Serv-Pro- they will identify source of smell and eliminate it. We used them after ice damage and glad we did. They found moisture with their equipment where we wouldnt have even thought it could get based on original damage location.

I’ll definitely look into air purifiers, I hadn’t thought of that. House is on a concrete slab, no basement
