Windows Above Sink

I’m updating the window above my kitchen sink to make the window wider. The space is going to be 56”wX36”h. I am considering three 18” wide casement windows, a three sash horizontal slider or an awning window. Each seem have their pros and cons. For the casement window, I am worried that three 18” casement windows might be too much framing and not increase light and visibility in that space. As for the sliding sash window, I worry it will be hard to slide open and closed. And as for the awning I’m concerned it won’t open up enough and provide good ventilation. If any one has any of these and can offer their experience, I would love to see pictures and hear about your experience!

I’d go with 2 casements instead of 3 and a 2 light slider instead of 3 light. I think the awning would give enough venilationin that size.

We're remodeling our kitchen this year but the window behind the sink will remain unchanged. We're replacing the granite with Neolith and getting a stainless apron front Rachiele sink with an integrated faucet deck and stainless backsplash behind the sink.

Casements are a lot of framing. Depending on make, the handles can be inconveniently placed, tough to clean and take a lot of sill space. The screens are on the inside of the window.

We changed from 3 casement to 2 moveable sliders on the sides of a fixed center panel. The screens are on the outside of the operable sections. I like it a lot better.

An awning will be the easiest to open, and provide plenty of ventilation with the added bonus of a bit of rain protection.

Do you need to have a window that opens at all. I like large one pane windows above sinks since opening any style is a bit of a hassle and the look of a picture window is a nice look.

Agree with bmorepanic. I have casements over my sink now and the handles are a bit of a pain -- I need to move things like hand soap and lotion whenever I open or close the windows. Also I'm not a fan of screens on the inside (it's an extra step when I want to clean the windows.) I like Patricia's example above, or double hung with screens on the outside. YMMV

A two wide casement will put a mullion in the center of your view. Depending on awning style, you could have the same problem with a horizontal mullion. I’d go three wide or fixed pane.

Fixed center with 12" sides gives you a 32" center for viewing.

I don't know where the window is to the outside of the house, but casement and awning windows should not be used where people could run into them. The screens would be on the inside so you will have to remove them to wash the window. The awning window would be nice when it rains.

I have sliders and as long as you clean the tracks they slide nice. I clean my tracks once a year in the spring. If you do get sliders make sure the screen also slides.

Than you for all of these great points and suggestions! After taping off the space, I think a bay of casement windows is out of the running. Three windows would be too little view and two casements would have the seam right in the line of sight. You bring up a great point to be careful with muntin layout because one could potentially be right in the center as well. I am currently leaning toward a 3-panel horizontal slider with 14-28-14 size panels or one large awning window. My fear with the horizontal slider is that is doesn’t seal in the winter as much as the awning and could be drafty. My fear with the awning window is that since it doesn’t open completely, it won’t let in much air in the summer. Prices for each are about the same. We won’t have trim but rather a dry wall return. My husband says in obsessing (I mean, maybe a little ;)) but I really want this to be a feature piece!

Here is an example of the window. (Sorry about the mess- My kitchen gets A LOT of use!) and these are my two inspiration picks. I love the clean lines on the awning window but I also like the look of the 3 panel slider! Right now, I am leaning toward awning.
