Area rug selection help

Hi,

I just recently moved to a new house and I’m having trouble choosing an area rug for our family room (off kitchen) and eating area. The kitchen countertops are “Uba Tuba” granite. I’d really like to change the kitchen countertops, but that’s not in the budget for awhile. In the meantime, I want to buy rugs that bring the rooms together and don’t clash with the Uba Tuba busy pattern. I like color, but I think maybe a black rug would be best. Also looking for probably a round rug for under the kitchen table. All help is appreciated! I’ve gone down a rabbit hole looking for rugs online! 🤪

Beautiful room, I wouldn't go with black simply because it shows dog hair more than other colors, but it could be a rug with some black in it.

These are samples of Uba Tuba granite that is not what you have

As for rugs IMO you do not have space for a rug under thetable it will just become a tripping hazard but in the other space with the over large furniture and placement it will be hard to figure out a size for the rug but for sure not black. I would remove the armchair for sure and maybe get a larger ottoman and no coffee table then just meaure to see what size to get and IMO look for something much lighter in color.

Thanks! It’s Santa Cecelia granite. Uba Tuba was in a kitchen 2 houses ago! I think that name just stuck in my head.

Thanks @Jinx for all of your help! I appreciate your time :) I like the first one you posted from “incredible rugs”, and he CB2 blocked color one (although I do think the dog hair might be a problem on black like the other poster mentioned”, and LOVE the rejuvenation rug but probably out of my price range. Do you think the blue will be ok with the black in the counter top? I was nervous to mix those colors. Thanks soooo much!

    Blue would absolutely be fine!

The last few years of decor trends and the formula of, ”All neutral in either gray or beige + only one color to pop + only one pattern” have people afraid to mix patterns and colors. I hope the tide is turning the other way. Nothing wrong with that formula in specific contexts, it can look great, but it’s become too universal, too easy as a default go-to.

The sites I posted, as well as Crate & Barrel, Rugs USA, eSaleRugs, Rugs Direct, etc have the mock-up feature if you want to play around.

ETA: It’s always a good idea to get a sample, though, as large rugs are not fun to return!

I really appreciate your help @Jinx. Thank you, thank you! I’m not very good at this and second guess myself as soon as I think I’ve picked something

My pleasure! Don’t sell yourself short, looks to me like you have very good taste. You’ll find the right rug. :)

That’s why I’m hoping the tide turns — so that people feel more confident in their decorating decisions, in making their space their own. Unique and personal, whatever the style may be.

Please update with whatever you decide!

You have gotten good advice. I love a good Oriental - I feel like they go with everything and hide a lot. I would not put a rug under your dining table. Maybe after you pick your rug you could look at some simple window treatments, like a Roman shade.

I agree with Jinx about adding lots of color and pattern. She really offered some great options which will add a lot of personality to the space. Another benefit of highly patterned Oriental rugs is that they disguise lint and dirt and always look clean.

I suspect that cute pooch is getting tired from having to get up and down to get all those rugs in place ;-)

I love Celery's first two rugs because they pick up the golds in the flooring and countertops and the red from upholstery. Jinx's third and fourth rugs, which mix golds and reds would also look great especially with pooch. Don't even think about replacing counters. They go perfectly with the floors. With the right rugs that incorporate golds and rusty reds, everything will harmonize. Order some very small versions of the rugs shown as your samples then exchange them for larger ones once you decide.

I really like the countertops, also. Very classic.

This black “Venetian Pinstripes” rug is an indoor/outdoor which might come in handy with your precious friend.

Thanks @freedomplace1 Do you think the indoor/outdoor rug would be comfortable? Maybe with a thick pad underneath? I have 2 kids as well that like to lay on the floor.

If you are going with a Persian rug design, get an authentic hand-knotted Persian, not a machine made imitation that will fall apart in a few years.

All Persians need a good rug pad underneath to prevent your shoes causing damage from grinding the rug into the hard floor underneath.

Please buy the appropriate pad from the rug dealer.

Different floors need different types of pads.

“ … not a machine made imitation that will fall apart in a few years.“

That hasn’t been my experience at all. Have you personally had that happen? If so, what brand(s)? I’m genuinely asking so I don’t ever buy those.

I currently have a hand-knotted heirloom rug, a Safavieh, a Loloi, a Surya, Jaipur, Ralph Lauren, and some others … all doing fine. All I’ve had a long time. I also used to sell rugs. New, used, all kinds.

Would like to hear your personal experiences.

    Hi Elizabeth,

Yes, the rug is fairly thin, but with the rug pad it should be good.

This is one of the actual customer reviews; I think this little one looks pretty comfy.:)

Btw, I like your original idea for a black rug...and not because you can’t use other colors. You definitely can! But the black is striking; plus, imo, a simple black rug works well with your furnishings/style and with a number of the existing elements in your space. And I also like how it provides a nice backdrop for the granite, without competing. As I mentioned, personally I really like the existing granite, so I love a simple backdrop that lets it shine. From my perspective, your instincts on all of this were spot on. You are much more design saavy than you think! :)

I agree, freedom, the granite is really nice! I think it’s a classic. :)

Here are some rug options for your room. I tried to select rugs that worked with your color scheme & would withstand soiling.

I would not use a rug in the dining area. Just too many items with barstools, table and chairs, and bookcase unit.

I don't know anyone that has had a machine-made imitation in their family that has been passed on for several generations with little or no damage.

Oh, ok. I was thinking maybe you had personal experience.

I don’t know if that’s always a factor on these threads, but I suppose it’s a good general warning … although not all rugs that are hand-woven last generations. It depends on a lot of things.

Budget and availability are factors, too.
